A man is abandoned at birth by his parents but is taken care of by a good Samaritan. After serving in World War II, he eventually abandons his own kid though for an understandable reason and dies young.

A group of coworkers work hard and play hard, booze, drugs, guns, and women. The guys they work for are assholes and eventually fire the films hero.

Nothing comes to mind, unless it's a clever Goodfellos description.

Nope.

The movie came out in the 70's and guns are only in one scene, that was a red herring. Their occupation is violent but no weapons.

The men's occupation still exists today, but it is much less violent. They could easily have made this movie with no guns, the guns are in one scene and used for comic relief.

Nope.

The movie takes place almost entirely in Dallas, it does have some very important time in Chicago, although you really don't see the city. The movie came out in 1979 and was based on a book written by a guy that used to be employed in the same industry. Did I mention it is still a very violent job, though less violent than back in 1979, although the industry is more popular now than back then I believe.
