cause they are more comfortable and cooler and you can cross rivers and marshes and stuff without having to wear wet shoes.
not hippy shit, but are big with the outdoor adventure type crowd. climbers and backpackers and raft guides and people that wear patagonia and mountain hardware and kuhl and shit like that. They originally came out the Colorado climbing and rafting scene and were made there for a long time.
They also last forever and can be re-soled like boots. I've had my current pair for 9 years and have re-soled them twice. They have more support and stability than hiking shoes. They feel awesome to wear, confidence to tromp around like you are wearing a full boot, but light and cool.
I love them so much, I never stopped to think about how they look. Guess they might look dumb but I am too used to them now to be able to tell.
