Said last night, it's preseason for the refs as well. 2 of those 4 were definitely not called according to the letter of the rule, and we're called out as such. Let's see if it is the same next week before everyone makes their tin foil hats, shall we?

This is the one thing the refs are very consistent with with quite a few infractions. How you think they'll get this helmet rule correct is naive.

The NFL gets harder and harder to watch every year. I'm not predicting complete doom, but I expect the ratings to continue to drop. Too much game stoppage and downtime.

It's the stoppage that kills me. I watched a rugby match (barely understood what was going on) and they had a tv review and it took less than 15 seconds. Literally playing the game 15 seconds later.

**** everyone. Visionman said that this was going to be the easiest thing to teach and that it was only going to be called once every other game. Since it happened 4 times in the Hall of Fame game, both the Ravens and Bears will play their next three preseason games without one being called.
That's because visionman is a goddamn genius and he sees what we don't. I'm jealous of his vision.

I think the problem is they are having the on field refs looking on a screen on the sideline and that takes way to long. There needs to be a a central officiating hub where all reviews are made there and thy just call down to the on field refs and tell them the call. The Hub can be set up like any Buffalo wild wings with a shit ton of TVs and then the same guys will be making the calls for every game. So for calls like the catch rule or helmet rule the same guys are going to be making that call so there will be some consistency from game to game

What part about LOWERING the helmet to make contact do you not understand? The fault isn't the rule, it was how it was called last night. That can, and hopefully will, improve. But there is nothing wrong with the rule itself as far as how it is written...

Oh no. we can't have this! YOU are not running around with your hair on fire screaming: THE LEAGUE IS DEAD!!! THEY KILLED FOOTBALLL!!

You must not be a true fan.

The league noticed that, because of the all the news of CTE and the continued, unabated head shots that were happening, parents were telling their kids to find another sport.

THAT, would really be the death of football....

Hopefully they are calling it excessively to try and set a tone and will back off in the regular season

This...I think with it being preseason and the games not meaning much the refs are calling them tighter to look back and review to determine which ones were a little over the top and which ones fall within the true nature of the rule

This. It’s not so hard to understand why they had to change the rules. It’s business. The NFL needs future employees to succeed. There won’t be any available if parents chose another sport for their kids to play due to football being dangerous with helmet hits and what not.

Do people really think the NFL will be like, “Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. It will go downhill from here since it’s a dangerous sport and we are not going to change the perception of the game or do anything about any dangerous hits. We won’t change anything to keep our business churning.”

Some people just don’t get for whatever reason. Yes it sucks and I hate it too but it’s common sense why they had to change it.

It’s not that hard to follow the new rule. Always keep your head up. Always and don’t launch yourself forward with your helmet. Now to add, don’t deliver big hits as this will fall under unnecessary roughness. Simple arm wrap tackle it is. This will definitely not help the defense since there will be more tackles broken but that’s the nature of the game with the new rules. The sport has changed. Players may not like it but they get paid a kings ransom to adjust to new rules as well.

It's pre-season. They throw a ton of flags on new rules. I'm sure it's going to suck during regular season, but right now they're most likely throwing it at anything and reviewing the film before regular season. Not gonna get all worked up over it just yet.

Have you been a parent of teens recently? My boys are 21, and I watched parents spend 1000's of dollars on travel ball, expensive camps, personal trainers, etc., all in hopes of making their marginally talented kid a star high school athlete. Delusionally thinking about college and comically even pro prospects. A little CTE ain't going to stop Friday Night Lights. I imagine everyone has that Facebook friend that posts videos of his daughter in a batting cage followed by clips of her at a basketball camp attended by 3 other kids.
Don't you know our children's accomplishments are our life tropheys.

Still doesn’t change the fact why the NFL is doing this. Future outlook. Simple logic. Yes there are parents still putting kids in football. I never said they were not. But there are parents taking them out for that particular reason as well. Which is more than before and still going.

I guess if the players play with their head up their ass's, like the refs, league execs, and Visionman, they have nothing to worry about.

The parents taking kids out of football are the parents of the marginal players. Kids that star in pop warner and early high school ball aren't suddenly being yanked from the sport just as the become college prospects. 6'3" 230 lb freshman aren't playing soccer or abandoning the sport. This is all about image and liability exposure. Trying to sweep up the mess they made by covering up what they knew for years.

Anyone recall the Bostic hit in preseason a few years back. Didn't change much. All I see in this rule is a better justification for refs to call upon when they see a hit they deem as too excessive. Like the Bostic stick.

I could have heard it wrong, but didn't Terry McAulay say on the broadcast that the refs were instructed that no matter what, throw the flag? I think this will happen well into the season...

I can see this rule coming up on a last seconds pass brake up in the endzone like the Orr ruling last night. It i going to create so serious butt hurt this season.

I don't think this is a "pre-season thing." I think this goes on all season and is going to make the game tougher to watch. 4 calls in the very 1st game of the year is just a sign of things to come.

Why aren’t people seeing this, the personal foul that was called in the end zone against the bears wasn’t for “leading with the helmet” it was a personal foul for hitting a defenseless receiver. Listening to SiriusXM this morning they confirmed my POV on this as well. At no point did the ref say he led with his helmet like they did on the other plays.

Last season there was a rule that came out and was called in preseason preventing the running backs from spearing or something like that when he was running in between the tackles. I don’t think I saw one of those penalties called all regular season to include the post season. Although I didn’t watch all games from every team.

So you believe the refs will call this rule correctly? Do you think the catch rule has been called correctly? I don't think so.
