The sport was supposed to grow exponentially but it's hit an alarming decline. What's the issue? Is it all the rules that is making the game as safe as possible eliminating huge hits? Is it parents steering their kids towards safer sports?

Here are the percentages:
NBC Sunday Night Football -13%
ESPN Monday Night Football -17%
FOX and CBS games -3% to -4%

What say you?

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Fire
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
I don't think they're catering to the audience. It becomes a bit disgusting at some point.

Stop diluting the product - I know, I'm not sensitive enough.

ignorant rule changes. hella product placement. Roger Goodell ruined the league. god bless him for all the money he's generated, but the game is a shell of what it was 7 years ago.

the bears in prime time twice doesnt help...

rofl

yeah, pretty garbage showings in both.

I miss the days when they'd have great games on SNF and actually be worthy of being on NFL Replay.

at least they got the bears out of the way early.. no need to flex them out when the game actually matter towards the end of the year..

ive never be able to watch a game on replay other than old super bowls minus the commercials.. football just use to seems better...

I think there's a lot to it, kick returns being neutered or they're trying to. Kick returns are an exciting way to start a football game and with teams being able to kneel and go to the 25, I'm sure there's been a lack of returns from teams. Penalties over stupid shit, you could probably make a thread over all of it but for me the biggest thing would be the excessive celebrations, I think there's a point where it's ridiculous but at the same time guys get penalized for stupid little shit but the lambeau leap is ok, it's more subjective on the refs part. No calls/or calls; people feel like their team is getting singled out. It sucks watching one team get calls and the other team not getting calls. The lack of big hits and not letting guys just play the game. I'm all for safety of the players, however, I'm not for treating them like they need to be protected from everything either. They chose to play the game and getting injured is part of playing football. Narrowing it down to where they can't even play makes the game less enjoyable. Bandwagon fans and the game feeling like a circus act have felt like the quality of the game has gone down. I've seen videos where guys are wearing one jersey and then taking it off and having the opposing teams jersey on him. The game feels cheapened when it feels like it's more about money than anything. Lastly I would say the lack of rivalries by players, this might not be a factor but watching a guy you've followed for 10 years all the sudden playing on a rival team. For fans it's a big deal, for players not so much as they go where the money is with FA.

I think the attempts at nerfing kicks was because of Devin Hester. all the other teams probably saw it as some kind of unfair advantage that the lowly Chicago Bears could have something so great, so they started pushing for rule changes. he still prospered despite it, so fuck them.

the game has also completely cocked up defense. you get a penalty for almost doing your job now.

the referees are too inconsistent. when it comes to "what defines a catch?" you know you're in trouble. the NFL's way of dealing with this is to issue apologies. apologies for what? the outcome of the game doesn't change even though you acknowledge you made a call that determined the wrong winner.

and rivalries lol. I wish we had a team that wanted fucking blood when they play division rivals again.

It is cutlure change more than anything else. EPSN is subscription TV and many familys have now cut the cable/sat ties (as we have) because the internet is just a better entertainment value and option. Staying up all night to watch an NFL game (if it is not your team playing) is not necessary to get your football fix because you can NFL Game Rewind, watch NFL Network or just pull up highlights at your command on the web.

Also, the NFL has had a terrible marketing approach for the past couple of years... Just look at the headlines on the homepage for NFL.COM...

Injuries: Dez a game-time decision; Gates will play
Rookie QB Lynch to make first start for Broncos
Cam (concussion) out vs. Bucs; Doug Martin doubtful for Monday
Brady, Ninkovich activated by Pats for Sunday
Kaepernick, 49ers working on restructured contract
Patriots cut guard Jonathan Cooper
Diggs (groin) listed as doubtful for Vikings
Texas A&M ends UT's crazy run in 2OT win
Michigan's Harbaugh sees Peppers winning Heisman

Mostly injury and contract talk... Exciting. They need to get the hype machine going.

They put bad teams on MNF now. Sold MNF and then screwed the people who bought it and made Sunday night football the game of the week. With fantasy football out there, i don't see a letdown. More and more are playing and watching.

You guys are all so wrong. It's the ability to stream games as easily as it is that is killing ratings. The sport is as popular as ever, it's just not being reflected in the TV ratings.

Lol, see? Everyone and their mom is streaming games. Red zone channel popularity is growing exponentially as well, which kills the ratings of the individual games.

I'll post a link near kickoff. You use acestream?

I think the viewing experience has declined in recent years. For me it's a combination of way too many flags stopping any flow of the game, and the onslaught of commercials and commercialism. It's a giant in-your-face corporate production.

I think Novak's point about streaming is probably a big reason for some of the TV number decline too.
