I have to scratch my head at not taking Maata. He's big, he plays good D, he scores like a whodunit, and he can skate pretty damned well for a defenseman. We're thin at D, and we score PLENTY of goals. I don't get not taking a guy I thought might go top 10 as far down as we were. I damned sure don't see passing him up for another undersized puck magician.

2nd coming of Gretzky? Shit son. Even better than that. It's the 1st coming of Teravainen.

Best get on your knees and ask for Teravainen to forgive you for such blasphemy.

your thankers dont look so smart

I have to wonder wtf we were thinking with that first round pick.

Sure he was rated well higher than we took him, and he was a great value, but don't we have enough fucking undersized fancy-pants wingers in this organization?

Seriously? It is pretty common in any sport to take the best available guy when it comes to the middle picks --- the reality is that most mid 1st round guys are not automatics to make it to the NHL - so I really don't get the excitement or getting down about this stuff...

Isn't it natural to be excited about your top draft pick who has tons of potential? Like saying the Sox fans shouldn't have been excited when Chris Sale was drafted...

This.

It's hard to form an opinion on a guy that has hardly played any hockey on this continent. And is only 17.

This ain't like the NBA or NFL draft, where the majority of first-round picks are expected to be starters in the following season. The entire Hawks draft class is probably, at minimum, two years away from playing in the NHL, and that's probably a low guess.

Having two guys from the 2011 draft class skate in the following season for the Hawks is very much the exception, not the rule.

Before everyone jumps the Hawks taking small skilled players, consider this. More and more is being said and actually done about the abundance of crazy hits and the concussions that go along with them. I heard a quote from Bobby Hull that I really agree with....paraphrashing he said that the playoffs in his day also brought a lot of hitting but the guys today are nuts, they show no respect for one another and could care less about if they cause major injuries with the wild hitting. The concussions to star players could very well cause a substansial rule change down the line. I mean this league is hardly on stable ground and cant afford to lose star players like Crosby and Toews. Im sure there will be something on the table in the next CBA tussle. Hey, I like a good hit as well as the next guy but whats gone on for the last couple of years has to be addressed. The big hitting players and teams just might go the way of the Edsel by way of NHL legislation.

I'll simplify things then - unlike in the NFL and NBA (and I assume baseball) - in the NHL they are basically drafting high school aged kids - kids that are not fully (physically) developed (let alone mentally), and in the huge majority of cases are not in the position to contribute to the NHL for years (if ever).

What I find shocking is that -frankly this is not a new situation -so how is it that it isn't common knowledge?

That and the simple fact that this kid is years away from even possibly contributing to any NHL team (if it ever happens). So really is it that big of a deal? (Rhetorical question).

I think a bigger adjustment for guys like Teravainen would be going from an international rink to the North American rink. Not as much room to use his speed and the lack of size can be a bigger issue.

That's why I'm hoping they give him a year of seasoning in Rockford instead of throwing him directly into the NHL, like they did with Kruger.

I think the problem with a lot of hockey fans and Hawks fans is they don't understand the draft. They think that it's like the NBA and NFL with instant gratification.

The Hawks got lucky that Shaw was so successful last year. That doesn't happen often. It's going to take awhile. The Hawks first pick is fine because they're not gonna take a goalie (great goalies go way later) and you typically pick a skill player in the first round.

I'm not even a big NHL fan and I know more about the draft than some of you. Stop complaining about a good pick. Lots of talent. Probably top 5 talent, but taking 18 is what a lot of people are saying.

ahhh...when you think he is right, so what you want to hear. awesome.

No, once he was correct in being the guy that broke the story that Toews did, in fact, have a concussion, that gave him credibility.

You think I wanted to hear that Toews had a concussion? Once again, you're reaching. Let it go.

So because the tree won't bear fruit for a few years means that it is nothing to be excited about?
