If you want to lose weight consume less calories than your body needs to support daily function and activity. Every diet relies on reduction of calories to lose weight, it's just disguised as avoiding certain foods in most cases.

This is a contradiction in diet philosophies, really.

If all you need to do to lose X lbs is cut X calories then it shouldn't matter what you eat. If you need to avoid certain foods (simple carbs mostly) then what the food actually consists of really does matter. Does anyone think that 1000 calories of white bread is healthier for you than 2000 calories of steak and broccoli? Calories in/out also doesn't take into account that different people are genetically wired to be different levels of lean or obese. If all anyone ever had to do is cut 200 calories from their diet and they would automatically lose X lbs per X time period, nobody would ever need to exercise unless they enjoyed it. All you would need to do is trim 200 calories out and wait the required time period and voila!, new pant size. Calories in/out is an absolutely bottom level basic theory of weight loss. It will work for a time but isn't sustainable.

The two books I listed explain why people get fat. The actual physiological responses that certain foods cause and what hormones those foods affect, to what degree, & in which types of people

Actually I'm probably being too hard on Taube, despite the fact he has absolutely no educational back ground or professional training, license or certification that qualifies him to give sound diet recommendations. It's a pet peeve of mine from a professional stand point. We can just agree to disagree.

ND is horrible.

Yes, people can also go on a starvation diet and lose weight.

In the short term the body is capable of lots of things.....lots of things I wouldn't try for long periods of time.

Also, as stated, a lot pf folks simply don't have an exaggerated response to high GI foods.

I could certainly go on a high carb diet and lose weight for a bit, but there is probably a 0% chance I could stay on it for the rest of my life.

p.s.

Before a morning workout I used to do natty peanut butter, organic jam, blueberries and whey with some wheat germ for crunch.

It's nice being big and being able to burn tonnes of sugars off just by moving!!!

I got over that in a day, but then again I haven't had HFCS in well over a year. The grain brain paleo thing took about a week to adjust to altogether though.

I've never been a big sweets person and I eliminated soda years ago, so that was one thing that was easy for me to eliminate.

I outlined this in another thread, but I've been on a whole foods diet for 5 months, now. No processed foods. Everything I buy (except for a few condiments) has one ingredient. It's all whole grains, lean meats (chicken and fish, mostly) and produce. I rarely go into the interior of the grocery store. I drink water exclusively except for a few shots of whiskey a week.

I've also been logging everything I eat into MyFitnessPal. My goal is for a 1000 calorie deficit per day. Even with that, it's hard for me to eat enough calories most days. I'm stuffing myself and losing about two pounds a week.

I'm down 52 pounds. I sleep better. I have more energy. I've haven't been sick. I've got to stick with this calorie deficit for a few more weeks, then I can pig the **** out!!! Not really, but it'll be nice to hit my maintenance weight and have those 1000 calories back each day.

It depends on how you define "healthy." Food is a lot more than just calories.

2000 calories of steak and broccoli is not bad for you. In fact, there's a ton of stuff that's really good for you in both of those things. White bread, on the other hand, is not good for you in any amount.

You can certainly lose weight eating white bread (and twinkies and big macs). That doesn't mean that those things are healthy.

If you burn 2000 calories a day, that means that you have a budget of 2000 calories worth of food that needs to include all of your essential nutrients. If you're trying to lose weight, your budget is smaller than that.

If you waste 1500 calories on garbage that has no nutritional value, you've got to pack almost an entire day's worth of nutrition into 500 calories. That's tough to do. It's why we have a generation of Americans who are obese and malnourished at the same time.

So My Fitness Pal has all of your info as you enter (body wt, foods consumed, daily activity/excersize and wt loss goal) it and thats how you are determining your caloric deficit per day?

You can try using honey, agave nectar, or stevia as an alternative. Any of those are better than regular white sugar

It's not, imo. However, the book Grain Brain makes a case that grains in general and gluten is unhealthy. HHM has read it and has been singing it's praises, hopefully he will weigh in on the question. I haven't read the book yet but it is definitely on my list to read

That's blatantly Special person. Unless you have a gluten allergy(which is incredibly rare) there is zero reason to not eat grains.

It's a pretty simple concept, but the hardest thing for people to grasp. Excess caloric intake is converted to body fat, regardless of the source; protein, carbohydrates or fats. I've no need to read a faddish diet book I'm very well educated and informed when it comes to diet. Thanks anyway.

If you want to lose weight consume less calories than your body needs to support daily function and activity. Every diet relies on reduction of calories to lose weight, it's just disguised as avoiding certain foods in most cases.

There are numerous studies and reviews of literature to support this.

I'd also add that website is a great place to research any type of fad nutrional supplement, CAM therapy or other bogus medical info you might run across.

This post.

Well, I was paraphrasing. Have you read the book?

Yeah, I've used honey in the past. I try and stay away from the artificial stuff, I read somewhere that creates insulin spikes just like sugar so there is really gain in terms of weight loss.
