Off Season Wish List

As stated above, number one on my wish list was unloading the Campbell contract. Mission accomplished. On the same day we get a first round pick for Brouwer. What a very nice gift. I did not like to lose Kopecky, I thought he was good in his role, and he had many of them, but no way would i give him 3 mill a season.

Hey Larry! What do you think about the pickups from yesterday?

Wazzup Ron! I like all the moves. We're going to have a much changed roster again.

New Faces:

1. Olesz

2. Montador

3. Brunette

4. Carcillo

5. Mayers

6. O’Donnell

7. Salak

That’s a lot of new faces from a team that also had a huge turnover last summer. But I like everything that has been done. Most importantly, the Bowmans know that our top players can win you a Cup. They’ve already done it. All that is needed is the right bottom-half players and role players. We had them with Buff, Ladd, Versteeg, etc. But those guys left, and let’s face it, about half of last years team was basically minor leaguers. Can’t blame the Bowmans, their hands were tied. But with the Soup contract gone, they had a lot more freedom. Their moves were masterful.

This years team did take the Cup favorite to OT of a game 7. And with the recent moves, next year’s team will be better for a number of reasons, including no hangover, and the return of hunger. A lot of that hunger will come from the guys who just signed who are late in their careers and have never won a Cup (I could be wrong on that). A big role of the 4th line is to provide energy. Nobody said it had to be a nuclear power plant, but I’ll definitely take it.

Can you imagine watching a Blackhawks game and looking forward to the 4th line taking the ice? Its something to be at least a little excited about. And i'm not concerned at all about Carcillo or anyone else taking dumb penalties on this team with Q at the helm.

We need to do lunch or something.

I agree with everything you just said. It's going to be an exciting team to watch. Not that last years wasn't, but there just didn't seem to be that spunk from time to time.

I can't wait till the puck drops! Is it September yet?

Yeah, we saw it last year. Their 4th line would outplay and outwork the opposition's top lines on almost a regular basis. And again I'm just not completely sold on Q being the cure for Carcillo.

Hendry's destiny

11:29AM ET

Jordan Hendry | Blackhawks

Defenseman Jordan Hendry is Europe-bound, it appears. Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com reports Hendry's agent implied his client would look into earning a job in the KHL or another league overseas.

The unrestricted free agent played sporadically for the Chicago Blackhawks over the last four seasons. The Blackhawks don't really have room for the 27-year-old anymore and it seems he hasn't drawn much (any?) attention from other squads. With defensemen such as Bryan McCabe, Scott Hannan and Anton Stralman still available as free agents, that wouldn't change anytime soon.

The fact that the Hawks have not room is no surprise...the lack of other interest baffles me. I think this guys is a hell of a good skater. I wish him well and hope he makes a full recovery from that nasty knee in jury he suffered last spring!

Callahan deal is next

9:10AM ET

Ryan Callahan | Rangers

UPDATE: This dance feels like it's going to continue until the very last minute.

As with forward Brandon Dubinsky, the New York Rangers seem poised to work out a deal with Ryan Callahan at the 11th hour -- according to Andrew Gross of NorthJersey.com. And, one day ahead of Thursday's scheduled arbitration hearing, the ball is in the Rangers' court, as far as Callahan's agent is concerned.

"They have our proposal," Bartlett said. "If they feel, at some point between now and then (Thursday), if they feel there is something to talk about, I'm all ears."

There's still the strong sense a deal will be worked out ahead of the scheduled hearing.

UPDATE: If Ryan Callahan ends up appearing at this Thursday's scheduled arbitration hearing, the 26-year-old will likely lose out on more than just a long-term deal with the New York Rangers.

If both sides are unable to work out a multi-year agreement ahead of time, Callahan will be awarded a one-year contract in arbitration. Should that happen, Larry Brooks of the New York Post points out Callahan is then poised to kiss his chance at becoming the squad's next captain goodbye. And Brad Richards would be the one to succeed Chris Drury in wearing the "C".

Brooks suggests the winger is likely asking for a multi-(four?)-year contract in the $4.5 to $4.75 million range. A deal is expected to be reached ahead of the scheduled hearing.

UPDATE The New York Rangers have pretty much one thing to do from here until Thursday, and that's re-sign Ryan Callahan. Their other order of business was to get Steve Eminger re-signed, and they did that for a mere $800,000, so all of GM Glen Sather's energy can be spent on inking Callahan.

The Rangers have plenty of cap room to do this. But if Callahan wants a long-term deal -- maybe four years? -- it could cost the Rangers about $4 million per, which might make them hesitate. With Brad Richards, Marian Gaborik and Brandon Dubinsky, they have $18.4 million committed to three forwards until 2014, and adding Callahan for that term would really box them in for the next three seasons.

Talks between the New York Rangers and Ryan Callahan are likely heating up now, as the Rangers top priority this week is getting their young forward re-signed. With the Brandon Dubinsky signing out of the way, the Rangers have about $6.4 million to re-sign Callahan as well as a sixth d-man, the New York Daily News' Jesse Spector reports.

It will be interesting to see whether the 26-year-old Callahan would be willing to let the Rangers buy out a few years of his unrestricted free agency. In that case, he'd likely get a deal for upwards of $4 million a season -- maybe something similar to the Dubinsky deal, which was a four-year, $16.8 million pact. However, if he plans on testing the market next summer as an UFA, his salary this season might be significantly less. If a deal can't be done, arbitration is slated for Thursday.

More Parise's future

10:14AM ET

UPDATE: One week. The New Jersey Devils and Zach Parise have one week to work out a deal before August 3rd's scheduled arbitration hearing. And general manager Lou Lamoriello is, finally, zoned in on doing what he can to avoid that get-together.

"We'll do everything we can," Lamoriello told Tom Gulitti of Fire&Ice. "That's the total focus right now."

In the eyes of many, Lamoriello's success or failure in securing Parise with a new contract may make or break the general manager's summer. And the 26-year-old winger has been vocal about wanting to avoid arbitration since June. Unless both sides are further apart than we suspect, a new deal is expected before 9 a.m. next Wednesday.

***

If Zach Parise tests the free agent market next summer, he will "undoubtedly will be the most sought-after free agent in NHL history," the New York Post's Larry Brooks writes. That kind of leverage will allow Parise to demand a huge deal from the New Jersey Devils as their negotiations continue throughout this season. But, chances are, a deal won't get done until he gets close to July 1, 2012, when he officially hits the market.

That said, the Devils have one thing working in their favor. After this season, there will be a new CBA in place, which means there is uncertainty about what the salary caps will be going forward and how cap hits will be calculated. So teams may be hesitant to offer Parise a deal that boxes them in. In addition, the new CBA might ban long-term, front-loaded deals. So perhaps the Devils will want to sneak another one of those deals in with Parise (they already did it with Ilya Kovalchuk) before it the rules change.

Sucks. I liked what he was--not a hero, but dependable to fill in when we needed him--the perfect 7th D-man.

Here's hoping he goes to a good team in europe. If he gets on HC Košice, I WILL be getting his sweater there.

Wrong thread perhaps?
