Good point but don't think we'd get a 3rd round comp pick for him leaving in free agency because we'll still be a team in rebuild mode so we'll be adding a good amount of players again next offseason i would think.
Right, but still. I don't think teams operate like that though. The Steelers traded him cause they had Pickens and both guys were ideally suited for the same position. I don't think Poles is going to trade away a quality weapon for his budding franchise QB because he's worried about extensions in the offseason.

i know it is a bit long, and it’s fantasy, but it is Fottball Guys, so…

Howdy Footballguy,

Huge NFL Draft news this afternoon as the Chicago Bears have traded the #1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Carolina Panthers for a boatload of picks -- two first-round and two second-round selections -- PLUSWR DJ Moore. Here's Kyle Yates with our Instant Reaction.

Instant Reaction: DJ Moore Is Traded to the Chicago Bears

by Kyle Yates
Exclusive to Footballguys.com

The offseason just got its first major shakeup as the Chicago Bears have traded the No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Carolina Panthers. Along with a surplus of draft picks, DJ Moore has been included in the trade package and will be catching passes from Justin Fields for the foreseeable future.

What does this mean for Moore's fantasy outlook? What can we expect from Carolina offensively now?

We break that all down here in our instant reaction to the blockbuster deal.

TRADE TERMS

The Carolina Panthers are trading away No. 9 overall, No. 61 overall, a 2024 1st-round pick, a 2025 2nd-round pick, and Moore for the No. 1 selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

FANTASY IMPACT

Moore had major question marks surrounding him for fantasy football given the state of the roster in Carolina heading into 2023. The Panthers currently only have Matt Corral under contract for next season at QB and there weren't many obvious ways to plug that hole with a major upgrade via free agency. Instead of dealing with yet another season of QB uncertainty in Carolina, Moore now will be catching passes from Fields in an offense that figures to be much more potent than last season.

As far as target competition in his new destination, it's almost a guarantee that Moore will be the WR1 for Fields and this passing attack. Chase Claypool was acquired at the trade deadline in 2022, but he did very little in the latter half of the season. Darnell Mooney is an excellent deep threat, but he's best suited as a WR2 for an NFL offense and he's coming back from a major injury. Moore will certainly have other players vying for targets in this offense, but he should easily see the majority of the targets. That should translate to around an estimated 25% target share in 2023.

It is worth noting that this will be in a run-first offense, so the overall volume may take a hit versus what he's seen in previous seasons, but this may very well be the destination that finally pushes Moore over the seven-touchdown threshold.

As for the other receiving weapons in the Chicago offense, they certainly take a slight hit but the attention that Moore will command could help generate additional scoring opportunities for players like Claypool, Mooney, and Cole Kmet.

FANTASY FALLOUT

Moore's departure leaves Carolina dangerously thin at WR. The depth chart now consists of players like Terrace Marshall, Shi Smith, Laviska Shenault, and Rashard Higgins without a QB currently on the roster. The Panthers are now guaranteed to have a rookie QB in town for 2023 and beyond, but they will need to make some additional moves to surround him with other receiving weapons.

Marshall should see a slight tick up in the rankings due to Moore's departure, but it'll be important to measure expectations. He hasn't proven that he can be a consistent receiving option for an NFL offense up to this point of his career and there's still a lot of unknown as to who exactly Carolina is moving up for in the NFL Draft. It would not be surprising to see Carolina dip their toes in the free agent market at WR and try to bring in someone like Jakobi Meyers to be a consistent option over the middle of the field for their rookie QB.

At the moment, there are no substantial risers for Carolina with this transaction. There are players who could be worth rostering in Dynasty - like Tommy Tremble - as we see how everything shakes out, but we should temper our expectations for immediate production.

STOCK WATCH

Moore's stock does rise with this move from the Panthers to the Bears. He'll be playing with the most talented QB of his young career and he's already proven that he can be productive for fantasy football with less talented passers. The biggest riser out of this transaction from a fantasy football standpoint though may just be Fields

Maybe not, i guess we'll see if Poles goes WR somewhere in the draft or free agency and/or VJJ steps up to where we won't need to pay 3 WR's too much. Claypool worries me because he obviously thinks he's better than he actually is or has shown so far in his short career with the comment from him that he thinks he's a top 3 WR in the NFL so he might think he's worth more than he is when it comes time to sit and talk new contract.

He actually has a fair point. It doesn’t make sense for them to extend both Claypool and Mooney. That’s just paying for 2 #2 WRs. Rather keep 1 of them to complement Moore, draft another WR next year.

Probably won’t happen but it would be nice to get something for 1 of them to make up at least a little for the pick spent on Claypool. But again, not likely that happens.

no

you let them duke it out

you got two WRs that both need to bring their game up a tier battling for their second contract.

they only gon build value this season, plus they gon push each other

And even if they don't get it from us, they're showcasing for the league. I'd rather have too many guys who can play than not enough, which has been the case for way too long.

Don't understand why some keep saying we got a boatload of picks and DJ Moore when we got 3 picks and DJ Moore but you can say 4 picks if you add Moore's worth of a 1st round pick.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good problem to have. My point was mainly focused on the Claypool trade vs Fields chemistry with Mooney, and the timing that they won’t sign both with the Moore acquisition.

It will be interesting to see how they both play this season.

A couple days ago, I figured Carolina would be a shoe-in to win a weak AFC South division with everyone needing a QB and them having a solid group of players around their rookie QB.

But them trading Moore and Saints getting Carr changes things a bit. More of a chance now they don't win that division as we've seen a talented QB with no good WRs struggle.

There's a decent chance the 2024 1st is closer to top 10 than the 20s from a playoff team.

Wish that division didn't suck so bad. Another top 5 pick sure would be nice to have. And possible. You never know with injuries.
