His strategy for building through the draft was to give away thirty-second overall for a total trash player?

Dude has no idea what he's doing. This free agency period was a trainwreck.
You know times a tough when you've become a parody of your own self.

All good signings today with good value imo, except Edmunds. Very talented guy, though, and very young, just don't see the logic in that much $ for an off ball LB.
I felt the same way but 3 things made it start to make sense for me.

1. Reading that last week Buffalo media said something to the effect that he was super talented but is more suited to play the weakside in a 4-3 and was a little miscast playing a MLB in a 3-4.

2. He is everything Flus dreams about physically; Long, Fast and Physical. He is the only linebacker I have seen that matched Urlacher's size/speed combination. He is 6-5! Passing lanes are drastically different when someone 6'5 with 4.4 speed is occupying them.

3. He came into the league at 19. It sounds like instincts could be questionable before but last year his pass defense took a leap up and he had maybe the best in the league. According to PFF he led all linebackers in pass breakups and forced incompletions last year.

It looks like its possible that Poles picked up an off the ball linebacker with Urlacher size and speed that is finally coming into his own mentally and could turn out to be a force. I am only basing that on his dramatic rise in pass defense last year and the number of drinks I have had but I will defend it until he proves otherwise or someone has a better explanation for his pass defense numbers last year.

You're not far off on the Edmunds is a better weakside LB thought

Multiple scouts say Edmunds, as a middle linebacker, might be miscast and would be more effective coming from the weak side. He didn’t have a great season in coverage; he allowed 476 yards as the nearest defender, according to NFL Next Gen Stats, which ranked sixth-highest among linebackers who were targeted at least 25 times.

Those stats are from 2021. Still, being ranked #7 overall as a of the ball linebacker is rare company.
He took a big step in pass coverage in 2022 based on PFF rankings and stats. When Flus was at Indi they had a plethora of really good inside linebackers that they developed. It looks like Edmunds is still growing based on his leap last year and Flus should help him get the most out of his potential.

This whole take is surface level based on my limited knowledge but I see the attraction and potential.

Bottom line I think Poles is set on taking good players at good deals in FA and is willing to pay for good value but will not overpay for a need unless he is desperate - which shouldn't happen unless we are on the brink of contending.

What about some secondary help? Jaylon with the injury and Gordon looking lost a lot of times (though he did improve later in the season). We haven't had much success either when Jaylon missed games. Not sure I want to wait for the draft to target this position.
