You are correct. Texas wanted to hit a small spherical object slightly harder and outside the reach of their opponents just a bit more than Detroit, which is why they won, because that want was intangible and helped spin a great narrative.
If baseball was a game of pure stats, and no intangibles, then this idea "crapshoot" thing wouldn't exist.

Let's say a player has a .300 batting average. Do you know what that means? That means in 10 plate appearances where he puts the ball in play, he will reach base safely three times via a hit. Now what happens over three games? Let's say he goes 0-3 one game, 0-4 in another game, but then 3-3 in the final game which just happens to be a clincher. He was pure shit in the first two games but was totally clutch in the last game, and still ended up with a .300 batting average. Narrative.

Let's look at the story of the Boston Red Sox drinking, and eating in the clubhouse in the month of September. I would consider that an "intangible" piece that was a cause of their fall from 1st to 3rd in the AL East.

Because no ballplayer in the history of MLB has ever ate or drank during a ball game in the month of September  There are many more factors than just their diet that led to their collapse

Wouldn't you agree that it was a factor?

I would have believed it to be a positive factor if the Red Sox did make the playoffs.

Well...I'm sure this guy ate and drank quite a bit while he was playing...

This guy was a raging drunk...

I would have to say that 99.999999% of the reason for the collapse was probably due to injuries and subpar performances while 0.000001% is probably due to a bit too much fried chicken and PS3 in the clubhouse  People will spin stories out of anything, but in the end you just have the numbers in the regular season. The reason we use the larger sample size is that they're more indicative of what the player is capable of. In the postseason, you have a small sample and anyone can get hot or cold during a small number of games. But I guess you already knew that.

So if the Red Sox lose, it's bad. If they win, it's good. Yeah, that sounds like something that is really going to be weighted much heavier than injuries.

How is drinking and eating a positive factor? The Red Sox beat the Rays in game 162, after nearly blowing a huge lead. But what did it for them is that they drank and ate in the team clubhouse. That is what factored in to make them win.

I didn't say it was weighed heavier than injuries. Way to miss the point.

The point is, there are things in sports that can't be explained in numbers. I say there is a small percentage, 5% or less of things in all of sports that aren't tangible things that happen.

Cheer up, Milwaukee. At least your NFL team isn't the Rams.
