Washing is easy and highly recommended with all plants, let alone outdoor plants.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm NOT going to wash 6 plants. Current options are:

1. toss all of i and write off the entire crop, or
2. cut off the main stalks from each plant and toss them, and just harvest the side branches and stalks, and not wash those
Why? The process takes all of a minute or two. You can wash handfuls in each bucket at a time. The washing part for me was easy. The trim is what sucks. Of course you want to wet trim and inspect for mold before you do. Then simply wash and hang to dry.

Is up to you. Is your power off? I am afraid what the Bay Area looks like right now. They are threatening us for noontime @RacerX

There have been threats and rumors of the power getting shut off today but so far it's all good.

Washing question - what does the flower smell and taste like after that process? I get that the THC/CBD is in theory unaffected.

On a side note, last night for the first time ever i fired up a small bowl of my home-grown. It was a popcorn bud from a Sour Diesel side branch that had broken off about 3 weeks ago. Clearly the Trichs had not had time to milk-up, but I dried and cured it and it burnt just fine and the results were surprisingly positive.

During the cure process the smell was pretty much like grass or hay but the smoke was just fine. I have found that over time the jars have regained their smell. Some folks have told me this was because I used the Boveda packs. They claim it ruined the smell. But according to tsts Boveda had done somewhere in Ca they said the reason the smell was not there during curing is that the Boveda packs actually keep the Terpenes inside the bud while regular curing without releases the terpenes which give you the smell.

I can attest to a great aroma now when I break a bud apart even after a year. But again that is a decision you have to make. I would rather wash 3 pounds of buds than not wash a pound and a half.

Taking the plant with the trichs clear is supposed to give you a racy head high. I would cut them all down NOW if it was me.

I did not get the racy head high, and I'm plenty ok with that.

I guess there's some washing in my future, still unsure if I'm going to chop them down in the next couple days or wait another week or two.

It depends on the strain with clear trichomes. Some give a very nice high with clear trichomes. One of the nicest joint highs I ever had was from a tiny bud pinched away a week after the plant started to flower.

Most blond hashes are made with younger plants. TBD's suggestions are general guidelines. Growing weed, like any gardening, is highly empirical, especially when growing outdoors.

@Xuder O'Clam and @truthbedamned

The description/instructions for a bud wash below is from Doc Bud, this seems very similar to what TBD posted, does this sound about right? If so, I'm heading out to but some new buckets and H202.

4 buckets total. (5 gallon buckets are perfect)

Bucket 1: 3 parts RO water to 1 part 3% H202.
Bucket 2: 5 gallons of RO with 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup Lemon Juice
Buckets 3 and 4: RO only.

Cut down plants, pull off fan leaves by hand, remove any necrotic leaves. Leave sugar leaves and anything with frosting on the plant.

Fully submerge in bucket 1 (H2O2) for 30 seconds. Submerge for a full minute if you had ANY sign of PM or bud rot. Let water drip from buds and then.....

Fully submerge in buckets 2 through 4 for 30 seconds each...lightly agitating the whole time.

Allow produce to drip dry. You can blow a fan on it if you like, just make sure it's blowing clean air.

Hang and dry per usual.

Final manicure of buds is best done after they dry. It goes very fast and you're left with washed, highly resinous trim....makes superb joints. I'm also educating my customers to select untrimmed buds, which are actually better than the manicured ones because they still have sugar leaves attached. The trichomes in the leaves have more THC than those in the buds.....so it's good to get the whole spectrum in there.

I give instructions for this in my journals, as I do it every single week, on every single harvest. Once you try it, you'll never go back.

This works so well for a couple reasons:

1. takes off dirt, foliar sprays, bugs, fiberglass dust, etc.
2. fully hydrates the leaves, allowing photosynthesis to occur for a day or two on cut and trimmed buds. I recommend leaving a light on the buds for the first day or two after washing.

I regret to inform you all that the saga has ended with 100% crop failure.

The plants don't smell like cannabis anymore, in fact when prying open a bud it smells like death. And i noticed black circles on the undersides of some of the fan leaves, idk if that's black mold or not but I am not taking any chances. It's all going in the trash when it does not pass the smell test (literally).

If you have not seen any fungus or any bugs (using loupe) the plants were likely suffering from low potassium and magnesium (black spots on leaves, or circles), which feeds the flower, not the leaves. Nitrogen is for the green growth, potassium and magnesium for flower growth and roots.

Edit _ I'm sorry for your loss. Thoughts and prayers.

And just fyi, some strains do have a stank to them, like garbage or rot well into flowering. The smell will revert to spice/hash when cured.

Thanks, Xuder. I am mourning the loss, this one will take a while to shake.

I knew something was wrong when one day I no longer smelled the pungent herb from a distance, after a couple months of increasing dank air surrounding my home. All the dank smell just completely ceased one day and rot took over. When I pulled open some colas that looked completely healthy, they wreaked of death. No amount of washing could get me to ingest anything that smells like that. Bye bye 6-8 lbs.

A friend has taken pity on me and is dropping off a couple ounces of colas that he just harvested, I guess that's all I get this year.

Oh wow that is to bad. Please do a post mortem to try and figure out what happened. I am curious if your gardner continued to spray them with water every time he was there. Like Xudor said that can really cause rot quickly and if your plants were to close together it would spread very quickly.

If so tell your gardner he owes you about 3K

Maybe it is time to invest in hydro?????? Got a 4x4 section of the garage or workshop with plenty of power? Could be a new exciting adventure.

And if there comes a time we could meet in a dark garage at midnight to protect your identity I would be more than happy to share:)

Just an FYI. I get 90 percent of my information from the internet. Being retired I have a lot of spare time on my hands. 10% is from actual life experiences. Both @Xuder O'Clam and @ruprecht understand the science a billion times better than I do. So I truly enjoy sharing the information I have learned over the past few years but when it comes to the actual science both of us should ask those that really know. I feel really bad that your crop was a total loss. I am sincere when I say if you need a jar let me know and we will figure some clandestine way to make it happen.

That gesture is very much appreciated, you are a gentlemen. But we live a few hours apart form one another and I have a couple local friends that are stepping up in my time of need.

I vow to learn from this experience and will return next spring and will #BeBetter.

Took down one of my two plants last weekend and was amazed. By supercropping I got a whopping 2.3 pounds Gotta split with my son because he gave me the baby plants.
