Though the pledge, written by a socialist, ironically, was meant for everyone in order to build that "melting pot" of Americana, it doesn't jive with
the America that was never America for me that Langston Hughes contrasted. So, though it was supposed to be for immigrants and Blacks as well as working class whites, it never ever mentions any egalitarian notions nor does it say anything other than loyalty to the flag and country, regardless of representation.
Again, this lack of a progressive, anti-racist, and egalitarian lens within the pledge is what makes many people say that it wasn't meant for those who are historically excluded from the seats of power.
I am not even going to go into the myth of the
White Bribe as MLK described it in his speech at Alabama.
For me, I am just happy that I support a team that sided with the correct side of history against racism.
I have been a Urlacher fan since he played Monster Safety and was our first round draft pick. I am torn between my dedication to fighting racism and for a just egalitarian society versus decades spent rooting for a hero. The problem with heroes is it is an armor, and underneath it is a man. The man who is Urlacher is despicable. The football player I cheered for and hope my sons will one day emulate is the armor. Such a sad, ignorant, hate-filled man...
