This was a rough watch, yet fantastic film.
The ending is totally worth it, but there's a clip from Man and Dog (academy award winning short) that covers a kill shelter in North Carolina. I watched the original uncut short documentary in film school, and the gassing scene still haunts me.

I can't even watch the ASPCA commercials.

Nice dogs! My Bullmastiff was the most crazy mean dog I have ever seen.I think he was in pain. Crazy ****** died at 2.

I've never had a bull mastiff but I did quite a bit of research before deciding to get my first mastiff and there is a big difference in temperament between a bull mastiff and the original "mastiff" or english mastiff. People seem to be more familiar with bull mastiffs for some reason and usually ask if that's what mine are. When I tell them it's just a mastiff they usually think it's the same thing.

Bull mastiffs are known for being mean and have an aggressive temperament. Mastiff are known as gentle giants and their protective instincts come out in a defensive way, not aggressive. A mastiff would rather bark and intimidate you to leave his territory and if you push him too far would rather corner you and keep you there until his human comes. Where as aggressive breeds llike bull mastiffs, pit bulls, rots etc would more likely attack if you pushed them to it.

Mine are both rescues. The black one: Virga, is a doberman/lab/husky/shepherd mix (He was born in the shelter and the people who gave up the mom knew who the dad was). He is now 9. The brindle one is Grommet (the first night we had her she threw up 13 pennies, a nickel, a dime and a grommet. Turns out the foster family had a 2 year old that was feeding the dog change and random things). We are told that she is Dutch Shepherd mix. She is now 4. We also foster greyhounds from time to time. They are such fun dogs.

Here is Virga on the right with my old roomate's dog who died a few months ago.

That film basically convinced me to adopt a shelter dog when my wife and I are ready. I still need to fence the back yard.
