Thanks Waldo! They need to try to sign Baez and Vogelbach for sure, and throw as much money as they can at Maples.

Agree. Baez did not have a big price and was said to be a easy person to sign. If previous years show on 1st round pick, Baez will be signed in less than a week or so. They also must sign Dunston and Gretsky...just because their sons of good players in their respective sports.

I think Dunston is the one that we want based on his athleticism. I'm sure Great One Jr. is okay too, but he's a 1B and I don't think they should throw as much money at him. They should focus on throwing their available $ outside of Vogelbach and Baez at Maples.

Gretsky won't have a big signing bonus at all, well he shouldn't.

I think he can afford not going to college seeing as who his dad is  But at the same time, getting to play for Tony Gwynn has to be really cool. I'd have a hard time saying no to a few years under Tony Gwynn's coaching.

That is true and might be why the Cubs won't sign him. Gwynn has helped a lot of college players and I think it's in the best interest to go to college.

He also doesn't need the money right away, so a few years of honing his skills will allow him to shoot up to 1st or 2nd round status. Then he'd really rake in the dough.

That's what a lot of player do and wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Cubs had a lot of signings the 19th but none of major, like top round picks. But here it it...

16th round pick C Rafael Lopez
18th round pick RHP James Pugliese
32nd round pick LHP Pete Levitt
36th round pick IF Travis Garcia
40th round pick LHP Patrick Francescon
44th round pick SS Kenny Socorro
46th round pick LHP Scott Weismann

Still top 15 picks yet to be sign. Get 'em sign!

As I understand it most, if not all, of those guys were 4 year college players which mean they have close to no leverage in negotiation which is why they were so quick to sign.

Yeah, it's going to be tough to get the big names to sign, but they've got till August I think so no big deal yet.

I had this whole thing typed out based on the old rules, but decided to double check and didn't relaize they had changed the rules 4 years ago. It used to be you had the rights to the player to basically the next draft, but now the deadline is August 15.

I think if the Cubs can't sign Baez they get the 10th pick in next year's draft. The compensation rule works for the first couple rounds only though, but I'm not actually sure about that. Definitely for the first round. I think they definitely want to at least get Baez and Vogelbach and then throw as much money as possible at Maples. Then they can throw whatever money is left at Dunston Jr. or Shoulders or whatever, but Maples would be sweet.

I'm pretty sure you are right about the first round pick thing. Actually as another aside for next year if the Cubs are this bad the rest of the way their first round pick next year is protected. So if the Cubs go out and sign Fielder they will only have to give up a 2nd round pick.

Vogelbach is a guy I really, really want them to sign. Our system is so devoid of any power that he instantly would have the most power potential in the system. Past that if they can get a few of the guys they got for signability reasons would be great. Depending on who the Cubs can sign this might be Wilken's best draft for the Cubs.

The Cubs should have no problem signing Baez...according to numerous reports. It's just how long will it take. I hope they sign him asap so he can get to camp.

Whether they can sign a guy like Maples who is strongly committed to college would indicate how much dough the Ricketts actually have.

I'm not so sure. A lot are still young. 20-21...so they couldn't be 4 year college players.

Dunston's son is still deciding if he wants to go to school or play baseball.
