You are referring to Welington Castillo, right?

Hah, yeah. Not completely sure what my brain did there.

Did I ever say that he did? But that is the main job of a back up catch, to hit well. I hate Koyie Hill just as much as anyone else, but it's not his fault that he was played so much last year. It's Lou Pinella's fault. Plus, 14 PAs? You can't base anything off of that.

How can you NOT base anything off 14 PA's?

0/14 = major fail.

Garza has managed to get a hit, his first hit for those keeping score, and he just came over from the AL.

Sometimes I'm almost convinced that you just argue to be a major ******. You are probably the only person that will ever stick up for Hill, and that's probably only because the only thing you hate more than being told you're a huge **** are Jntg and Waldo.

And what does Sweet Lou have anything to do with Hill's crappy average? He was played because no catcher can play 162 straight games even when healthy.

And no, the primary role of a back up catcher is to catch. You've forced me to agree with you on sheer principle there. But when the backup goes 0-14, even in spring training, there's a problem.

Nobody said it was his fault they played him, but he should just be sent down or released and allow Max Ramirez or Welington Castillo to take his job.

Why? What makes Castillo/Ramirez so much better? I'm not saying they aren't, because they might be, but Koyie Hill is certainly a pitchers catcher.

It's 14 PAs... every hitter has slumps. Yes it's bad, but it's the first week of ST. Why can we use 14 PAs against Hill, but if someone else does it, it's no big deal?

Great Garza has gotten a hit in SPRING TRAINING. That's fantastic. It's spring training.

I'm not "sticking up" for him, but to say he should be cut after going 0-14 in SPRING TRAINING is ridiculous. Plus, does anyone actually expect Hill to hit well? Why is anyone surprised at this? It's Koyie Hill. He's not on this team to be an offensive force, or even to start games, he's here to be a defensive back up. That's exactly what should be expected of him.

You're right, no catcher can play 162 games, but why did Koyie Hill start 60 games last year? Why did Koyie Hill pinch hit for Geovany Soto? These things are all on Lou.

Why is 0-14 such a big deal? In the 2nd week of the season last year, Colby Rasmus went 0-15, as a starter for the Cardinals. Does that mean that he should have been cut?

1. Hill has had a one year slump. It's not even like oh, he's gone 0-14 this season. I can't find the proof, but I'm fairly sure he had a stretch that he went like 1-32, or something like that last season. He strikes out in nearly 1/3 of his at bats and gets a base hit even less than that, like 1-4, roughly.

2. I'm not saying that at all. The fact that Colvin has gone 5 for 22 so far has me a little concerned. And before you get all "ZOMG, it's only spring training," he hit close to .500 last year in spring training. And it's always nice to see everyone, regardless of whether or not they make the roster or not, hitting well. It gives them confidence for the beginning of the regular season in Iowa, Tennessee, Chicago, etc.

3. So, the hitting only applies if it's not spring training? That make no sense at all. Right, it doesn't count on score sheets and stats and all of that. But you don't think that it gave Garza some confidence for later on? I'm pretty sure every time Hill walks up to the plate he remembers his last 14 plate appearances and the long walk back to the dugout after each one. That's not exactly good for morale. Likewise, if Hill can start stringing hits together, and I'm not saying he needs to go 3-4 with a two-bagger each game, but even 1-3 with a walk would be a HUGE improvement and it will build on itself. Hitting, even in spring training, matters.

4. Then if Castillo or Ramirez can prove that they are equally as proficient defensively behind the plate as Soto (because I think Hill is a fundamentally better catcher), Hill should be cut. Maybe not right away, but if he hits his body weight consistently, that's an issue.

5. You're right. No one expects Hill to be a huge offensive powerhouse. Mostly because he's proven that he isn't. Again, I'm not saying that Hill needs to consistently go 3-4 with doubles and triples, but a base hit or a walk or an RBI here and there isn't too much to ask. Even for a backup.

6. Sweet Lou did have a bit of a man crush on Hill, I'll give you that. Hill probably should have only caught closer to 40 games. And he should have NEVER pinch hit for Soto. That is just dumb.

7. That's comparing apples to oranges. You said before everyone goes through streaks of not hitting, this is one of them, clearly. And the difference between Rasmus and Hill is that, unlike Hill, Rasmus is only in his second year in the big show. Hill is like the Ray Allen of the Cubs. Also, in Rasmus's two years, he's proven he can hit. He went from a .250-ish average to hitting about .275. And he's probably only going to improve on that.

1) No, Hill hasn't had a bad year. He just sucks. But if you look at it, he's really not that bad to have as a back up catcher. We have Castillo and Ramirez in the minors, so if Geo gets hurt, they should be starting and still have Hill as the back up. It's all in how he is used, really.

2) Yes, hitting does matter, even in spring training. But an 0-14 is no reason to cut a guy. Even if it is Koyie Hill.

3) I agree, if Castillo and Ramirez can prove that they are just as good defensively, then Hill should be cut. I don't think that they can prove that, because I don't think they are as good defensively.

4) RBIs? Really? Come on now. 8 spots don't really get a lot of RBIs...

5) Ray Allen? What? Rasmus has had like 300 PAs more than Hill, so I'm not really sure what point you are trying to make. And BA? :obama:

1. If you just said Hill sucks, why are we still arguing about this? Like I've said, he's a good defensive, backup catcher. But to be fair, the Cubs need all the offensive help they can get.

2. Then if Castillo or Ramirez can prove they can hit better than 0-14, which I'm pretty sure they both have already, Hill should lose his job.

3. Defensively, Hill is a better catcher than Soto. But since Hill can't hit his way out of a house made of toilet paper, Soto's the better starter.

4. RBIs may have been a dad example. But a hit or a walk every now and then isn't too much for.

5. It was an age joke. Ray Allen is like freaking 100, and Koyie isn't exactly young blood either. Because Rasmus is a starter he has more plate appearances than Hill because he's a backup? I'm not sure what you're getting at?

He said that the 0-14 wasn't why he should be cut though, he has proven that he can't hit.

Why should it matter, though? If he is used properly, he won't be hitting very often anyway.

1) I disagree, kinda. We do need offensive help, but it's the back up catcher... it's not like they ever pinch hit. I'm totally fine with our back up catcher being defensive. (FWIW, the more I thought and read into this, the more it made sense to me; I used to think Hill shouldn't be the back up too

2) No. It's too small of a sample size, for one. For two, it's the back up catcher... see above.

3) Of course Soto is the better starter. He's a top 5 catcher in baseball.

5) Nevermind... I thought you were tying Ray Allen in there. I didn't get it. Just nevermind lol.

3) Definitely agree, Geo had the 6th highest WAR of Catchers last year, despite having played much less games than anyone else in the Top 20 or so. Some had like 200 more AB's than him. He may be the best offensive catcher IMO.

It's not just pinch hitting though. There are going to be days that Soto gets the entire day off to rest. And in those instances, going from Soto's .280 average to Hill's .214 average is probably more significant that it seems. I guess the only thing that I have to say is that if our backup catcher is better defensively than our starter, it doesn't make any sense to keep him. It just seems backwards, even though it's not. As long as Castillo or Ramirez is just as good as Soto defensively, it should be a no brainer to release Hill.

Did I ever say that he did? But that is the main job of a back up catch, to hit well. I hate Koyie Hill just as much as anyone else, but it's not his fault that he was played so much last year. It's Lou Pinella's fault. Plus, 14 PAs? You can't base anything off of that.

How insightful.

I didn't even want to answer. Because it's obvious and I know other people will.

Well he was hurt for part of the year, don't forget that.

Honestly I think Soto plays better when given regular rest. When he starts to play a lot it seems he gets tired and starts to hit worse.

And while he had a few less PA than some of the other catchers it wasnt by that much. Most of those with 200 more either played some DH or their managers are stupid and played them every game (McCann - Molina).

120 games is all Soto should be playing and he likely would have hit that last year had he not gotten hurt.

Silva gave up 4 over 5, not good for him, but it is good for Cashner's rotation odds. :)
