I think it’s reasonable to talk about who’s the better prospect in real time, as the weeks progress, as long as you stay consistent and provide context of why a guy is good. Dont be lazy and point at stats, tell us how they are put in a position to succeed.
The double dipping at WR continues to make no sense, and when holes show in this team, probably at the edge rusher position--you ridicule the gluttony of riches at pass catcher and realize while its nice to be deep there, the game is not won and lost in the secondary. Furthermore, it makes Poles/Ben look like hypocrites when he got hired and they say "Ben can get the most out of guys, he'll tailor his system to the player's talents and not the other way around." Somehow that turned into: "Well Ben needs HIS guys." Drafting WR4 at 39 overall is entirely fair game to ridicule, and I will join anybody in doing so. It was completely fucking stupid to do that.
I liked Mike Green too, and I get passing on him. 2 sexual assault charges in a short period of time, leading to him having to transfer from Virginia to Marshall is a hard sell, even to the McCaskeys--who have taken chances before on bad apples.
I'm annoyed that edge got ignored in the draft. Makes me hypothesize with Grady Jarrett being the 3T, what he made a career of being great in Atlanta doing before they switched to a 3-4 and his production dropped because he got moved out to 5T, which are entirely different roles, despite the need of obtuse fans to say 'bUt HeS a DeFeNsIvE tAcKlE, wHatS tHe DiFfErEnCe' and Shemar Turner backing him up, which Dennis Allen confirmed he's DT in his system. Dexter is the odd man out, and he hasn't been very consistent thus far. He's lost weight because the team told him to, and he's 6'6, the kind of height and length Dennis Allen loves in his edge rushers. The only other reasonable, and grotesque option is that Poles is waiting for a camp cut in a month and a half or so from now. Makes no sense for a team to trade anybody when players report to camp in a month/little less than a month.
Ersary was a good prospect, too, but he had flaws, and it's not terribly difficult to figure out why the bears said 'no thanks' and took Ozzie instead. Ben Johnson was consistent both at the presser introducing Thuney/Jarrett/Jackson that he wants smart/high IQ OL who can do multiple things in multiple sets and can identify defensive line formations/twists/stunts, which the bears were straight garbage at a year ago. Ozzie's scouting report described his instincts as elite in this regard, while Ersary, according to NFLDraftbuzz.com's scouting report:
Complex blitz packages and delayed stunts can give him trouble, suggesting he'll need time to adjust to NFL-level protection schemes
Ersary also has problems where he whiffs on blocks in pass protection, really big turn off there. This isn't the B1G where he can get away with a bad DE from the Northwesterns or Rutgers of the conference, but can't do that with Rashan Gary, Hutch, or Van Ginkel/Greenard. Now obviously, Ozzie's bend affecting his run blocking at the pro level along with occasional slow/heavy hands are something he's got to clean up and should be critiqued accordingly should he suck, but you can't say he didn't make sense based off of the benefit of the doubt the new HC gets before week 1. He's communicated what he's wanted and got it. As long as I don't ever have to see Kiran again, I like the Ozzie pick.
I will always hate drafting preinjured players. AC Joint is a tough one, as it connects the clavicle to to the shoulder blade. Ease Loveland in, get him some reps, especially mid-late season where he'll have fresher legs while you get the most out of/beat up the 7th highest paid TE in the league. Next year, Loveland's expectations are to take TE1 away from the 7th highest paid TE in the league, and to make his salary go away so the saved money can be spent on something important for contention.
Rating: 86.4 Rank: #9 Forty: 5.01 In a league that increasingly values mammoth tackles who can hold up in pass protection while still moving bodies in the run game, Ersery profiles as an in...
