Marvin Lewis 15 years no playoff wins, but they benefited from continuity.

This is an NFL Wildcard game.

The refs should perform even better in playoff contests, give the audience (bettors) the clear indication that they are doing their absolute best to be impartial and not tip the scales.

Nah, blowing whistles with the ball in the air lol.

Maybe I have rose-colored glasses, but I've been watching football for at least 20 years with a critical eye.

I do not remember the refs being like this in playoff games or ship games 10 years ago.

I remember BAD calls, yes, but I don't remember it feeling like they were manipulating/controlling the game.

It almost feels like both teams are facing a 3rd opponent in the refs, who can't win the game, but always seem predisposed to inserting themselves into the most crucial moments.

Almost as though, in the modern NFL, the drama generated is more valuable (eyeballs/clicks) than officiating a fair sporting event.

I don't feel like either team has gotten screwed or that the refs are trying to manipulate the game.

But I definitely feel like we have to wait after every play to see what the end result really will be.

"Oops, we blew a whistle during the play. Sorry."

"First down? Oops, there was a timeout called before the snap and we just decided not to blow a whistle."

It doesn't scream "we've got a favorite in this game" (How could they, it's Vegas and Cincy!) It just feels like they're trainees at this job.

I have several (small) bets on this game that are all going to go to hell if the Raiders don't get the first down, and I have zero confidence they will.

You make very valid points.

But that then points to gross incompetence.

I keep having this conversation, and it reminds me of the movie Don't Look Up.

The truth is, they are too stupid to be truly malicious lol.

You're seeing things. No replay showed evidence of that. The whistle blew when the ball was half way to the WR and they weren't covering him.

Yeah, it's incompetence more than anything. It's not good when the officiating crew looks confused constantly.

The Raiders can't force a punt all day and Cincy plays conservatively enough to have to punt.

Feels like Cincy should have put this away a long time ago.

Don't it make you wonder... like, is it really that hard to officiate these games?

Has the rulebook gotten so fat and unwieldy the refs can't do it with their current setups?

Or has the ref talent pool just been drained of all the competent ones who went to the booth.
