Just got back from my second Cayamo cruise, where I caught live shows from (in no particular order):
Elizabeth Cook
John Fullbright (2). I still have a man crush on this guy.
The Lone Bellow. Everybody's darling up and coming band, but personally I can't stand them.
The Dusty 45s (2). More fun than you can shake a stick at. Told the lead guy it was my friend's birthday and he pulled her up on stage and polka'd with her.
Shawn Colvin (2)
Kacey Musgraves. Being groomed for stardom, has a lot of growing to do in terms of her songwriting.
St Paul and the Broken Bones. Another newish act that everybody loves but I would rather pass on.
Rodney Crowell. Under-acknowledged as a songwriter and not a bad performer either.
Lyle Lovett (3). Amazingly good band, and a truly nice, approachable person.
John Prine (3). I love John Prine. I was a bit disappointed though that he did almost exactly the same set for all three shows. I love his later stuff, not just the classics. Also, his health is questionable so if you ever want to see him before he kicks the bucket do it soon.
Shawn Mullins
Birds of Chicago (2). OMFG I love these guys!
Buddy Miller
Jim Lauderdale
The Black Lillies. Meh
Holly Williams. Meh
Edwin McCain. Meh
Humming House. Another Mumford and Sons wannabe act.
Richard Thompson (3). Still and forever THE BEST GUITARIST IN THE WORLD. A musical genius. Not a very cuddly personality or interested in pleasing the crowd, though.
Lucinda Williams (3). With awesome lead guitarist Stuart Mathis formerly of the Wallflowers (where IMO his talent was wasted). Lucinda has let herself go somewhat and looks a bit like Witchie-poo on antipsychotics but still put on tremendously good shows.
Jill Andrews. I'd hit it.
Brandi Carlisle. Loved her last year, am sort of over it now. At least until she gets some new material.
Todd Snider (2). He no-showed last year. This year they brought him onboard at St Barth's for two previously unannounced shows. What can I say? I love the guy as an artist and performer, but he is what an addict with underlying mental health issues looks like a couple of years before they die. Very very very sad.
Joe Purdy. Meh
There were many other acts on board, but there's no way to do it all and I'd rather see multiple shows of my favorites than try see everyone at least once. Other non-musical highlights include Saline Beach on St Barth's (rated #5 out of a hundred on some "best beaches" lists and also more or less nude), snorkeling at Buck Island off of St. Croix, too much food and too much booze. I like to think I am well-traveled and have been to many wonderful places, but I would still call this the best vacation ever.
