Even though I understand he has aged passed his value, I will miss Pedro Strop. I wish him well.

I think they'll try to bring him back. They need some veteran continuity in the pen and Strop wasn't as bad as his ERA suggested. His K/9 was 10.58 and his FIP was 4.19. His stuff was largely fine, he just got bit by HRs badly last year.

Stras was born in SD and went to college here. SD Trib has just put out an article that the Brass is going to go after him. But the Nat's are still the favs.

I know this. My point was that Stras probably won't listen to any offers less than 6 years and 180 million. I doubt he's giving discounts.

Agree. For the right price why not?

The starters available in FA not only bring top tier quality but quantity as well.

Cole Hamels was good for Cubs until injury, and there are ten more attractive options.

Should be interesting.

I wouldn't mind Hamels back at a cheaper price. $17M would have been way too much, IMO.

The Cubs have added righty Colin Rea to their 40-man roster, as first reported by MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian (via Twitter). That move will allow the organization to retain his rights, rather than losing him to minor-league free agency.

Righty Allen Webster was outrighted, the club added in its announcement. As was already a given, the team picked up its $16.5MM option over first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

Rea inked a minor-league deal with the Cubs and spent the entire 2019 season at Triple-A. In 148 innings there, he pitched to a 3.95 ERA with 7.3 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9. The Cubs will be able to control Rea for the league-minimum salary in 2020; while he has enough overall MLB service time for Super Two status, he didn’t spend any time on the active roster last year and is therefore ineligible.

Well he is interesting as a #5. He is a command pitcher and is not going to beat himself as Chatwood can do to himself. Alozay was limited to a 4 inning guy and that may end up keeping him out of concideration this year.

I had to guess Theo goes cheap here and adding Rea to the 40 is a signal of this.

I could see Theo going with Yu, Q, Hendricks, Lester, Rea then bolster MR with Mills, Chatwood and Ryan. All ex-starters. Then the 7-9 would be Weick Wick, Underwood and Kimbrel in general.

That leaves 1 spot open to a high leverage late inning arm.

AAA would be Alozay building up innings for the 2nd half. If he fails then expect Theo to look into the dead line if Rea doesn't take off.

Any chance Salazar might make sense for this team?

So nice to hear the reason he did not get picked for a game last year was the Bryant effect.

He's just too unreliable. Salazar makes the most sense for a tanking team who won't be hurt if he bombs but can flip him on the off chance he manages to stay healthy.

Well they wanted to see what they had in Alozay when Hamels went down. And Chatwood was also pitching far better in his stints.

But here is the vibe that I am feeling right now.

Joe was getting 6m per. They cut back and signed David on a starter manager deal.

They sweep out the attic and saved 20M.

They add Rea to the 40. Could be a min deal for a rotation spot vs 20 mil for Hamels.

Every signal given thus far is cut the fat. They paid out 248M for a go home kids. Teams pay 100M for that same flavor.

So I'm just seeing them taking a chainsaw to payroll and if David can get them to look like contenders then they will add.

If the Cubs would take a huge chunck of dollars off of Heywards contract, the White Sox would be a great fit. Heyward could keep his home life, the White Sox get a bargain veteran, and they desperately need defense for their young power hitting core.

I see the Sox interested in Costenellos but it would be so much better for everyone if the Cubs took Costenellos, and the White Sox got Heyward in RF to at least have SOMEONE that can get a few extra outs.

Don't see him even as a possible explosive bullpen arm?
Not arguing the point but was thinking he could be useful in relief.
