How many kick-off and punt returns did Walter have?

His first season he lead the league in kickoff return yards, and I believe he routinely returned kickoffs in college.

I loved Walter as well, but we are not talking College here. Sayers had more NFL return TD'S in one game, than Payton had in his career. Walter may have better, but calling him a better all around player is a reach.

No, it's not. He could kick, throw, run, and like I said, he led the league in returns his rookie season. I'm sure if they asked him to routinely return kicks, he'd be pretty damn good at that too. Was Sayers the emergency QB AND PUNTER?

Being able to punt and pass is really of little to no significant importance.

I agree that Walter was the better player but it wasn't because of these side issues, it was because he was an amazing offensive weapon in the backfield (running, catching, blocking, not the occasional pass or kick).

If you picked Payton, then why not Sayers? Sayers probably had more raw talent than Sweetness. Game breaking speed, world class moves, returned kicks. Payton is the best all around player that has ever played the game, but I feel like Sayers may be one of the most talented ever.

Wow.....realy???? Gee, I don't know, maybe it has to do with the fact he blew out his knees and that shortened his career.

It kind of is when someone else says calling him the better all-around player is a reach. The only thing Sayers was better than Payton at was running in the open field.

Ok? But you are starting the franchise with him. That presumably means you don't have that knowledge going into this decision.

And Sayers put up Hall of Fame numbers in 6 years. Don't act like he was some slouch.

There is a lot of that on here. Personally I think it has more to do with some homers being upset with Sayers post Bears comments, than his actual play, not to mention, about 90% of them never saw him play. Again, I loved Walter, and who was better makes for some interesting conversation and debate. The hate for Sayers, on the other hand, is stupid and childish.

Please show me where I called Sayers a slouch. And the OP says you get to choose any Bears player of all time, so yes you do have that knowledge going into this decision.

Sayers was a Devin Hester-level of his day punt returner. He was a once-in-a-generation athlete. Walter was the better back because of the things he did from the running back position, not kicking and throwing.
