Currently on the Hawks roster, I would bet Shaw and Saad could kill penalties. You also have Smith and Nordstrom.

Normally you want your best defensive minded forwards on the PK. Guys with quick feet and active sticks. The Hawks have great two way forwards already in Toews, Sharp, Hossa. Toss in Kruger and you need to plug in two more guys to to run a 3 partner units (Nordstrom, Smith, Shaw potentially).

So.... about that PK.........

Figured someone would bring it up.

If you noticed, when the puck was on the right point of the umbrella , Nordstrom had to step away from the middle of the ice to shadow Ovechkin. Kruger now had to take away that point and the middle which left Backstrom and Green open more. So what do you do? Leave the passing lane open for one of, if not the best shooters in the league or try and have one guy cover two points and the middle of the ice. The hope was if it went to the middle a D could get in and block it. It was essentially at 4 on 3 at that point.

Would of been the same tactic used if Frolik was on the ice.

If you noticed... no one shadowed Ovechkin on the first goal. No one even paid him any attention. He just crept his way from the right faceoff dot down towards the net and ripped it.

Bad.

Then again... it was a lucky bounce and only a player as good as Ovechkin could snipe farside glovehand like that from that angle... still.... uncovered.

Wasn't a big fan of Nordstrom. Hayes looked better, but I still like Morin. Handzus < Pirri.

I'd rather see Smith over Nordstrom on that 4th line... in fact I wouldn't mind seeing a line of Morin/Pirri/Smith as the 4th or potentially 3rd line. But, I can't complain. 2 cups in 4 years, and another win tonight. I trust them and will give them much more time before critiquing their decisions.

Too easy to jump all over them for it being the first game. Gotta see it 20 games in or so.

That's what I'm keeping in mind. There's kinks, cobwebs, and jitters to be worked out and it's a long season. Some guys looked good and some didn't but even though some guys could have played better, 1 game is too far of a sample size.

Joakim Nordstrom, welcome to the NHL. Here, go cover Alex Ovechkin on the power play.

I rewatched the powerplay goals. The first one was right off a faceoff that was lost.

The second one, for some reason the Hawks were playing a tight box and gave Green plenty of space. That's obviously deadly.
