I agree that we are stuck with him until he improves. I was hopeful that Marmol would be a bounceback candidate, but it appears like the slider doesn't have the amazing movement that it once had. The decrease in the gap in velocity of pitches was another well documented problem from last season. It is looking more and more like Marmol might be done, but pitching is a funny thing. Perhaps he will find the break on his slider again. We better hope he does.

its that plus teams are waiting him out more now im sure. on my phone so i dont have the stats but that could be the case. i dont think he is done though

They're waiting for Marmol to get frustrated that they're not swinging and missing. They are waiting for that flat fastball or the safety slider that doesn't slide. Marmol will have to adjust to that. If he can't, then he really is done.

Look at fangraphs pitchf/x. His fastball is down three mph from when he was a top reliever, and his slider has the least horizontal movement of any point in his career. The fact is Marmol got by on incredible stuff and he simply doesn't have that anymore. I am hoping it comes back, but if it doesn't I don't see much future for him.

I hate our pen. Why would any quality starter want to stay in Chicago?

The boos cascaded down from the new patio seats to the dugout boxes, which Chairman Tom Ricketts exited during Wood's meltdown.

 D3A must've been in his ear

Interesting that Clevenger is getting a start the third game in the season. I am glad to see that the Barney hitting second experiment lasted all of 1 game as well. Kind of interesting that LaHair lost the cleanup spot already.

It probably has more to do with trying to space out the lefties etc. and giving guys an early day off since they were run pretty hard in spring training. I think you have to wait a couple of weeks before declaring the Darwin Barney experiment dead.

The Jeff Samardzija experiment is going to be more interesting though.

I agree Barney might get more shots at the two spot, but it is encouraging that he has gotten exactly one start out of three in that spot.

This is what I'm excited about. I'll be the first to admit that I've dogged Samardzija during his entire career. Honestly, I thought he made the wrong choice not going into the NFL. And the fact that his 2009 and 2010 seasons were so terrible that I remember making my comment to my dad that he was still young enough to see if he can make it with an NFL team.

Last year, it seemed like he finally had everything click. He still has some control issues. Let's face it, he walked way too many guys. We can only hope that he's able to continue to mature and cut down on the walks. If he does that, his stuff is good enough that he could be a middle-of-the-rotation guy for a while.

I have this inner dread where I think he's going to suck, but it would be wonderful if Jeff Samardzija brought us back to the promised land of win...
