Kyle Turris asks Phoenix Coyotes for trade - ESPN

The standoff between Kyle Turris and the Phoenix Coyotes was taken up a notch Thursday.

Kurt Overhardt, the agent for the unsigned center, confirmed that Turris has asked the Coyotes for a trade.

"This has never been about money, we've been upfront with the club from Day 1," Overhardt told ESPN.com Thursday. "We've respectfully requested that the player had the opportunity to move forward in his career by having a fresh start."

Coyotes general manager Don Maloney's stance has been that he wouldn't trade Turris. And that hasn't changed.

"The CBA gives us certain rights to Turris and we are exercising our rights," Maloney told ESPN.com in an email Thursday. "There will be a point in the future Turris will have the right to decide who he wants to play for and how much he will accept.

"He is not at this stage, given his age and experience. If he wants to play in the NHL this season, he will re-sign with us. We will not trade his rights under any circumstances and are prepared to live with the consequences if he decides to sit out this, and future, seasons."

The no-trade stance confounds Overhardt.

"I know that the Coyotes' organization can benefit significantly by moving this asset," Overhardt said. "As a Group 2 free agent and speaking to several teams -- which I won't name -- I know that there's a number of clubs that have put forth significant offers to the Coyotes' organization which include valuable assets which would benefit Phoenix."

If Turris isn't signed by Dec. 1, he cannot play this season, according to the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

"I'm confident that we'll be able to work this important matter out with the Coyotes' organization so as to benefit both parties," Overhardt said.

Turris, 22, had 25 points (11 goals, 14 assists) in 65 games for the Coyotes last season. He has 46 points (19-27) in 131 career NHL games. He was the third overall pick in the 2007 draft.

Pierre LeBrun covers the NHL for ESPN.com.

I honestly would like this alot....

I would play Turris over Stalberg/Olesz :dunno:

**** this kid. 22 year old sitting out because he doesn't want to play for his team. I'd respect him more if it was about money.

Maloney is right on. He is not at this stage, given his age and experience

good point, but he put up decent numbers in Phoenix and I think a change of scenery would do him well

There have been rumors out there that the Blackhawks are interested.

I'm still not really high on him, but he does have some skill and obvious potential.

No idea on the asking price.

From what little I heard here in Phoenix...

They want a mix of veterans (low salary) and youngins/draft picks

Lepisto was already in Phx once, so maybe he is available?
Maybe we can sucker them into taking Beach?

Olesz's salary may be too high, so I doubt he is involved.

I'm guessing they would like Stalberg

A Stalberg would be exactly the type of player that they would want (as part of the package). A guy with some upside because of his speed and he would get top 6 minutes where he can possibly thrive.

They also might want a Kruger, Smith, or even a Lalonde.

I think the fact that most people here want to get rid of Beach just shows how little trade value he might/probably has.

Would you do a Stalberg/Kruger package for Turris and a late draft pick?

I'd have a hard time turning that down

The rhetoric is hardcore both ways - Maloney has actually stated that Turris wants a 2 year deal at around $3+ or a 3 year deal at $4+. Now Turris's agent is declaring it's not about money; he wants out of the desert. Well Kyle, you're experiencing some of the CBA policies in place to keep young players from being able to jump ship (no matter the reason).

Where's the truth? Would have to find out before even considering a price. Career numbers aren't screaming a worthwhile payday, but the kid has potential.

Agree....I have doubted that it wasn't about money, but we don't know otherwise so idk

I would...but I think it would be more like Stalberg/Kruger/3rd rounder for Turris. Seems like a lot, but I always say if you jump on a deal and are excited for it, the other team obviously isn't. You really have to propose a deal where you say "ugh, I really don't know if I want to do it...but I guess I would".

I think Turris is better than Kruger right now and has a higher upside. Stalberg isn't really important to the Hawks but could be to another team (IE: Grabner). Blackhawks can afford to lose a 3rd rounder after how many high end draft picks they have had over the last two years.

To me it seems like Turris was asking for the ridiculous amount for 2 reasons.

1. The Coyotes would not pay it and they would trade him.
2. The Coyotes would be dumb enough to pay it and he is grossly overpaid and rich!

I'm liking Kruger more as the games pile up.

He's not an outstanding presence on the ice, but whenever he's out there, the puck tends to stay deep in the offensive zone and he's a strong back checker and very good on the boards.

Ah, the old "change of scenery" arguement. That old saw has worked a few times, but mostly it's failed. Typically, a team overpays (thanks to the related 'one crazy GM' arguement) and gives up a boatload of talent. The acquisition, and the team around him underperforms, getting both the coach and the GM fired.

I don't know - I don't think I would be interested in the proverbial needing change of scenery/unrealised potential guy.

I think if it were me in the GM's spot, I would be looking for available vet wingers - potentially someone to take the pressure off of the top 2 lines. I am not sure what Brunette will do -and I would be looking/researching some insurance options.

The unrealised potential type guys are best suited for rebuilding teams, not ones in the hunt.

That being said - I suppose it all depends upon who it is that they would take. I would not move Kruger for this guy. Stalberg, Scott, a range of other guys mostly not in the NHL... yeah keep talking, but it isn't knocking me out at this point.
