OT: Mike Greenberg "Reward the best of non playoff teams with first draft pick."

Said on Mike & Mike in the Morning today.

What do you think?

I like the idea. It gets rid of teams tanking for the first pick. Gives more meaning to the regular season.

I like the idea. If the worst team tanks the season, why rewards them?

And instead of getting the 8th spot and get crushed by the first seed you tank, to get a hell of a player next season which increases your title chances? That´s more deserved?

The thing is you want to have an exciting league in which every team can compete and has a chance to win. I don´t mean the title, but even regular season games.

You reward the best ninth team with the number 1 pick there will be 17-18 good teams then but you have 12 really bad teams who don´t have a chance to get out of that slump.

12 teams like the Bobcats, Wizards, Hornets? What kind of a league is this in which you blow away 12 teams by 20 points every time you face them. This would be boring as hell!

It was that way, problem is, they kept giving the draft pick away to the Celtics and Lakers of the world for not much in return. Have's kept having. Lottery is the leagues way to control this from becoming the norm.

I would say that the system as is, is the best right now. Don't get me wrong, I usually root for one of the better teams to get a top 3 pick because I like the idea of creating super teams. But, lets look at the stats...

1988, 1990, 2003, 2004...are the ONLY TIMES the worst team in the league got the first pick.

4 out of 28.

The worst team has 25% chance of getting the first pick and about 64% chance of getting a top 3 pick. I think that is very fair.

Yet I would love for Minny or Milwaukee to get high picks because again, I like watching good teams.

It wouldn't be the ninth team, that team will be in the playoffs.

It will be the 17th team.

16 teams make the playoffs every year. and 17 on down doesn't. Giving the top pick to the team that just missed the playoffs gives the teams something to play for at the end of the season, instead of rewarding a team that doesn't try to compete.

Think about it, you either get the 8th seed in whichever conference you happen to be in, or the top pick and have a chance to improve right away. You think teams 18-30 won't be trying to get to that spot?

Do you think Milwaukee would compete for a playoff spot if they could get Davis? What about Orlando and Philly? All of those teams could use him...they would all tank. That solves nothing.

Hell...throw New York in there. For a fringe playoff team, getting the first pick in the draft is a BETTER outcome than getting into the playoffs and a very likely first round exit.

There really is no way to stop tanking.

I don't like the idea of the best non-playoff team getting the first pick because sometimes that team has close to 50 wins. Why should a 48-34 team get the 1st pick? That would be completely unfair to the teams that truly do suck and REALLY need the #1 pick.

The lottery helps stop tanking a little bit because there is a chance that anyone can get the #1 pick... but teams tank anyway to improve their chances.

without the lottery, I think tanking would be rampant. Teams would start giving up with 30 games left of the season when they realize they have no shot at the playoffs.

The lottery was originally created because of teams tanking for the worst record in hte league. The Houston Rockets did it in the 1983-84 season to win Olajuwon. Portland was tanking as well to try and beat the Rockets to that pick.

Just because teams are tanking for the best odds, doesn't ensure them the #1 pick. Rarely does the worst team in the league win that #1 pick.

It´s good that the worst team doesn´t get the number 1 pick directly. But it should have a high chance. But the first pick should go to one of the 5 worst teams for sure!
