Vikings 'want' McCarthy as QB1, won't rule out more Rodgers talks

EAGAN, Minn. -- Naming J.J. McCarthy the Minnesota Vikings' starting quarterback is "the outcome we want" and "the outcome we're headed towards," general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said Wednesday in the first comments from an organizational decision-maker since the team embarked on a $300 million offseason shopping spree that included direct conversations with free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Adofo-Mensah, however, refused multiple opportunities to rule out the possibility of revisiting discussions with Rodgers later this offseason if he is still available. Rodgers visited the Pittsburgh Steelerslast week, but another possible suitor -- the New York Giants -- appears to have moved on.

"For me to sit here and say that anything's 100 percent forever, that's just not the job," Adofo-Mensah said. "We're responding to scenarios and different information as it comes. So obviously things can change, but right now we're really happy with our [quarterback] room and we're going to look to upgrade it in different ways."

Russell Wilson welcomed by Giants, expects to be starting QB

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Russell Wilson is coming to the New York Giants with the expectation that he will be the starting quarterback. It's no different than the approach he has taken every year of his illustrious career, which includes a Super Bowl victory and multiple Pro Bowls.

Wilson officially signed with the Giants on Wednesday, less than a week after the team added veteran quarterback Jameis Winston as a free agent. New York also re-signed Tommy DeVito earlier this offseason.

None of that has altered Wilson's mentality.

"Yeah, I expect to be the starter and come in here and be ready to rock and roll every day," Wilson said during an introductory news conference via video when asked how the situation was laid out by the Giants. "I think this team's really looking for somebody to lead them in every way."

J.J. McCarthy says Vikings haven't told him he's QB1 in 2025

The Minnesota Vikings have not told J.J. McCarthythat he is their starting quarterback, he said this week in an interview with the "Up & Adams Show" on FanDuel TV.

"And I'm happy they didn't, because I try to earn it every single day. And I never want that to be given to me. it's such a privilege and opportunity to give me that chance and I'm just going to make the most of it every single day," McCarthy said in the interview with Kay Adams, which aired Tuesday, from the NFLPA Classic golf tournament in Mexico.

The quarterback position remains in flux for the Vikings, who decided against using the franchise tag on 2024 starter Sam Darnold and watched as he signed a three-year, $100.5 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks. They tried to re-sign veteran Daniel Jones, who spent the final six weeks of 2024 on their practice squad, but Jones opted for a one-year deal worth $14 million with the Indianapolis Colts, where he felt he would have a better chance to start.

He may be happy but he'd be happier if they told him he was starting, LOL.

The front office still has not ruled out Aaron Rodgers.
I'm aware but they should just get on with it. I don't know if Rodgers is done but he's past being premier and not noted for helping young players.

Fields tabbed Jets' QB1: 'We believe in Justin,' GM says

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey left no doubt about the organization's post-Aaron Rodgers quarterback plan, declaring Sunday that Justin Fields is their new QB1.

"We believe Justin is the starter," Mougey told reporters at the annual league meeting. "We believe in Justin. We believe we can win with Justin, so we're excited about Justin."

In a sense, Mougey put his mouth where his money is.

The Jets gave Fields a $30 million guarantee as part of his two-year, $40 million contract in free agency -- starter's money -- but there was no public anointment by team officials until Sunday.

Not only did Mougey confirm Fields' starting status, but he took it a step further, saying the organization believes Fields can replicate the career trajectory of Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield -- former first-round disappointments who flourished on their fourth team.

"We have seen some of that as of late and it did [play a factor] as we went through the process, and we think we could have the same," Mougey said of Fields.

This will be Fields' third stop. He was drafted 11th overall in 2021 by the Chicago Bears, who dealt him to the Pittsburgh Steelers after three underwhelming seasons -- a 10-28 record, 40 touchdown passes and 30 interceptions.

Thrust into the lineup as Russell Wilson recovered from a preseason calf injury, Fields helped the Steelers to a 4-2 start. He was efficient, if not prolific. He averaged only 184 passing yards per start, and had five touchdown passes, but he threw only one interception and posted a career-high 65.8% completion rate.

But he was back on the bench as soon as Wilson was healthy. The Jets saw promise in Fields' six-game stint, confident that he could continue to improve as a passer.

"You saw it last year," Mougey said. "He was 4-2 as the starter and probably had some of the best quarterback play of his career. We're going to do everything to support him when he gets here."

Fields' ability as a dual threat intrigued the Jets. In four seasons, he has rushed for 2,509 yards. Mougey called it "a unique athletic skill set that adds another dimension to the game that's hard to defend."

The Jets hope Fields can be their long-term answer at the position, but they can pivot next year if it doesn't work out.

They released Rodgers, 41, after two seasons and targeted Fields in free agency. In addition to Fields, the Jets have returning backup Tyrod Taylor, 35, who is "going to be right on [Fields'] heels," according to Mougey. Next on the depth chart are 2024 fifth-round pick Jordan Travis and former practice squad player Adrian Martinez. The addition of Fields won't preclude them from drafting a quarterback, though Mougey declined to speculate.

After the draft, Mougey said he would entertain potential contract extensions. The Jets have several players looking for extensions, most notably cornerback Sauce Gardner and wide receiver Garrett Wilson.

"Once we get through the draft," he said, "we'll talk about potential extensions for whoever that might be."

Contract talks are ongoing with wide receiver Allen Lazard, who is due to make a nonguaranteed $11 million in 2025 base pay. The Jets trying to get him to take a significant pay cut. In March, Lazard was given permission to speak to other teams about a trade.

Fields is definite improvement over washed up Rodgers..

49ers GM John Lynch expects Brock Purdy deal to get done

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch doesn't know exactly when a long-term contract extension with quarterback Brock Purdy will get done.

But Lynch made it clear Monday morning that he does expect it to happen, perhaps even at some point in the near future.

"I think we're going to get the deal done," Lynch said. "That's what I believe. We'll just leave it at that."

While neither the 49ers nor Purdy have put any sort of timeline on striking a deal that could raise Purdy's salary by as much or more than 10 times the $5 million he's set to make in 2025 under his rookie deal, Lynch expressed more confidence in the deal coming together than he has in previous discussions of the negotiations.

At the end of a disappointing 6-11 season, Purdy said he hoped that he and the Niners could work something out by the start of the offseason program in mid-April so that he wouldn't miss any organized team activities.

Speaking at the annual league meeting to local reporters on Monday, Lynch acknowledged that while there's no guarantees that a deal could be done by then, it's at least in the realm of possibilities.

"I don't think it's too optimistic (to get it done by then)," Lynch said. "I think I understand why Brock wants that. We'd like that very much, so we've just got to find that right place for both sides and I would love nothing more than for that to be the case."

Vikings happy with J.J. McCarthy, had to look at Aaron Rodgers

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Minnesota Vikings' conversations with free agent Aaron Rodgers this month did not reflect any concerns the team has about second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday.

In his first comments on the matter, O'Connell said "two things can be true at the same time." On one hand, he said, the team believes McCarthy -- the No. 10 pick of the 2024 draft -- is its quarterback of the future and very likely its present. On the other hand, Rodgers' pedigree and interest in signing with the Vikings demanded a full internal discussion.

"We took [McCarthy] 10th in the draft last year after a very extensive evaluation process," O'Connell said at the NFL's annual league meetings. "A lot of things that we hoped to see from him, we saw in a short amount of time. Unfortunately, he got injured and we tried to maximize as much as we could with his 'redshirt' year. ... And I think J.J. was able to take some things out of that and be ready to go for the spring."

This was a great interview!

This coach loves Justin Fields. For the first time in his short NFL career, it seems that Justin Fields finally has a HC and front office that’s willing to pay invest in him as a quarterback, and build an offense around him.

I now feel that I was wrong wanting Justin to stay in Pittsburgh because I thought it was his best chance at success. The posters that felt the Jets were the best spot for him, appear to be correct.

Takes a big man to admit he had it wrong. No shame in that - we have all made a wrong call from time to time. All good. Main thing is what we felt has been confirmed — and for all JF guys who felt he never got a fair shot, it’s great to see a team finally fully invested in him. Gonna be a fun season with both Caleb and Justin ballin out!

Yes sir. I’ve been wrong sometimes, I’ve been right sometimes, and I’ve learned a lot from posters since I began reading CCS. The most important thing for me is getting a chance to discuss the Bears with other Bears fans, which is why I joined the forum.

And yes, the ideal season will be to watch both Justin and Caleb progress as quarterbacks, while leading their teams to the playoffs.
