I’ve loved playing baseball for as far back as I can remember, but I didn’t really get into following the pro teams until I was probably 12 or 13.
I essentially became a White Sox fan because my best friend and I would always play Major League Baseball on my NES (circa 1988 or so). He would always pick the Cubs and since I wanted a “home” team and didn’t really know anything about any of the other teams I would pick the Sox.
We are still friends today and still give each other crap about the other’s favorite team. We both agree that you have to pick a side. Rooting for both teams just doesn’t fly.
I vary between disinterest and dislike for the Cubs. Most of the time I forget about them but I can’t say there haven’t been times where seeing them lose has put a smile on my face. Typically it’s the obnoxious fans I dislike rather than the team itself. Although I do realize that every fanbase has their share of them.
A very small part of me wouldn’t mind seeing them winning a WS one day just to make my friend happy but until then, it’s fun to rag on him about how bad they are.
