The Boston Bruins have confirmed there's a very real possibility that Tim Thomas will not play in 2012-13.

"I'm approaching this season as if Tim Thomas won't be playing next year," Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli. "There's a strong chance he'll be taking the year off." Apparently Chiarelli has known of this possibility since the beginning of May. Thomas comes with a $5 million cap hit and his contract will expire in the summer of 2013. However, if he takes a full season off, there's a good chance that he will not be able to stage an effective comeback. Thomas will be 39 by the time he hits the free agent market.
Rask should be the guy now.

Thomas said that he's seriously considering just taking the year off.

Anyone else have a hard time believing he's going to take a year off and then be able to come back and play?

I don't believe Thomas has a reputation for being an incredibly hard worker.

Well, given his past and how much he had to play all over the place just to get into the NHL, I won't question his work ethic. The guy battles and I respect what he's been able to do. In that regard, he's someone that should be looked up to.

But he put himself before the team with the whole White House situation (a selfish move that had negative results) and he's doing it again with his want to take a year off. Have a legitimate issue that requires you to miss this season? Fine... call it quits and don't damage your team with your salary cap hit and don't collect $3,000,000 for doing nothing. There's nothing wrong with that.

But to make yourself the center of attention once again and then have the nerve to collect $3 million for nothing while at the same time saddling your team with a $5mil cap hit? Dick move.

If this was a hawks player doing it im sure your stance would be much different.

This is just a ploy to get traded out west. As they have stated a million times they will suspend him and the cap wont be issue as the marc savard exemption will be issued.

The whitehouse thing has nothing to do with hockey, he didnt do anything wrong just like how "kane didnt do anything wrong" his choice to not go.

Wow. Amazed at how a bunch of Hawks fans get their panties in a wad over a 38 year old considering being done with hockey.

He's won the cup, the conn smythe, and vezina.

What's so wrong with him seriously considering being done?

If he's leaving, he's gonna call it retirement so stop calling him a dick for maybe being tired of playing hockey after he's had to work so hard. And he knows that if he leaves now, he doesn't leave the Bruins in a terrible situation because Rask can do it.

Real dick move retiring when you're old and tired

He said nothing about retiring. There's nothing wrong with retiring. He said he's thinking about taking a year off. There's a difference.

Retires: His cap hit of $5,000,000 is off the books for the Bruins.

Takes a year off: His cap hit of $5,000,000 counts against the Bruins.

If he takes a year off instead of officially retiring, it really screws over the team.

So you think that him taking a year off means that he's just gonna sit there and let the Bruins eat up his contract?

Pretty sure it's not gonna happen anyway. It's either a ploy to get traded or him just being tired from a very tough season.

It doesnt matter to their cap.

If you read all the articles about the Bruins instead of having knee jerk reactions to something so stupid you would see the marc savard exemption issued.

Why are you getting your butt hurt over this?

Couldn't he also be trying to use a little leverage (which will expire on July 1 with his NMC) to have some say as to where he will move on to?
