People are getting stupid when it comes to Gasol

Here is what you typed

Or the pistons of the early 2000s...or plenty of other high pace offensive teams or grinding defensive teams. At least not as big of a role as he would like.

None of that had anything to do with anything that I typed. It has no value outside of derailing thread or trying to bait me into an illogical argument that I am not making. Straw man = straw man.

Well to be fair, I never mentioned you specifically. I said people who act like Gasol is untradeable or a foundational piece. I'm not trying to create a straw man argument at all. I gave my opinion on the situation and that's that.

The guy who calls Lebron "a bad rebounder for his size" and says TMac wasn't a great player tells people THEY don't know basketball...give me a damn break. Pau wants out, the Bulls should let him go. He is a damn good player, he isn't a better player than Demarcus Cousins...stop the madness.

My main problem with Gasol is that while he's a good offensive player, he's not a dominating offensive player. That would be perfectly fine if only he wasn't atrocious on defense. If he's standing under the rim, he can get you some blocks, but if he has to move out just 5 feet, he's terrible. In today's NBA where PG's and wings are ultra athletic all over the place, he gets lit up. Besides that, he's soft as wet tissue. He gets bullied for rebounds, instead of dunking the ball, he'll try to lay it up and miss, and when matched up against a player of equal length and good strength, he's ineffective in the post and is turned into a spot up jump shooter. Combine that with the fact he's going to opt out next year and the Bulls aren't a true contending team (IMO), it's a no brainer why people want him traded.

I realize that's not the OP's premise, but this is a thread about Gasol afterall and this board is here for conversation. Like I've said already, Gasol isn't terrible. He isn't our only problem on the team. But he still should be traded because of everything else I and others have said.

I have been one of the biggest defenders of Pau Gasol on CCS. But he really isn't a great fit for the Bull's style of play. And when you consider how many other effective bigs the Bulls already have.

The Bulls' offense needs to be fast-paced in order to be efficient. Gasol needs a slower pace to be efficient and the Bulls deliberately slow the pace down to give him looks.

He's not a good transition defender. He can't defend the pick and pop or pick and roll at all. He's only effective as a shot blocker as the C on defense in a slow pace against a half court set. When opposing offenses push the ball against the Bulls, Pau becomes even more useless on defense.

Yes, he is a bargain. Yes, he does give the Bulls an additional rebounder and offensive option when in doubt. But he's not exactly a huge difference maker at this point in his career.

Wouldn't you know it, Horford plays a decent defender in Cody Zeller and gets shut the **** down.

Here's the Bulls problem:

Keep Pau this season: Ceiling is the second best team in the East; no title. End up probably losing him for nothing.

Trade Pau this season: Ceiling is still the second best team in the East (not as likely); still no title. End up with at least a late first or second round pick or other rental expirings for him.

Just because he's opting out doesn't mean he's not resigning. Opting out is just the smart thing to do if you're Pau.

Would you really want to sign him for more money and more years when he's already not a great fit and will be 35?

I understand what the opt out means, but I don't think he's resigning. Nor do I think the Bulls want to resign him, precisely for the reasons you outlined above. Since he's already stated his intentions, shopping him is the best option. You're not winning the East, let alone the title this year, but I'm sure you can find a desperate team on the verge that you can shop him for a first round pick.

I agree. Though who that desperate team may be is a bit of a question mark.

Hard to think any of those teams think Gasol is going to put them over the top.

Well it's hard to think any team other than the Cavs, Warriors, Spurs, and maybe the Clippers are legitimate contenders for the title. I'm talking purely in terms of making the playoffs.

I wouldn't count out the Thunder either..

But yeah.. if the teams just want to make the playoffs, sure. I don't think that keeps Gasol from opting out, which is a trade kicker probably.

I give a shit about Gasol opting out. They need to trade one or two of the bigs and get a decent two layers in return and Gasol is one of the guys who they should trade.

The Bulls outside of Butler were horrible last night on offense. Gasol is not as bad a defender as people think and they need his shooting. The Bulls are a horrible shooting team. Gasol is a need until you improve the wing talent.

He is still top 10 on that list. He is not at the top, but he is better than half the guys. Hell the Bulls gave up 104 points to the 76ers with Gasol and Rose out. All I read is how those two are terrible defenders. 104 points to the 76ers.

Gasol actually has the best +/- on the team when it comes to starters. He is not the best player on the team. People say things like this team needs to play fast. Why???? They are a much better team on the defensive end and they are bad on offense. They need to play slow. After a complete change of the roster we can talk about being better playing fast.

I think there are very few teams that just want to make the playoffs. Getting the 8 seed and getting bounced in 4 is not enough for a team to give up any value to the Bulls. I don't think trading Gasol for nothing helps.

Rose is a terrible defender? That's news to me.
