This isn't a surprise. There's no one else on the team even remotely worthy of using the tag on. Plus, this season was such an outlier for him that it's perfectly reasonable to ask him to do it again. If he does, then you're happy to pay him top of the market money.

The ideal move would be the transition tag like they did with fuller. That way JJ gets a fair deal

This is an encouraging sign. JJ is here for at least another year. And he shouldn't complain too much because he will get paid top 10 corner money. It's a good starting spot.
I think franchise tag is top 5 for the position

Terrible article probably written by someone with the IQ of daniel.

The bears are not fumbling anything. If he wants more than they are willing to pay they will franchise tag him. Derp
Well he did put the "might" in there so he didn't say he will fumble it.

It's fansided, give the guy a break. derp

Yeah it's a smart move to tag him and let him prove himself again. The guy has been a legit cover corner since we drafted him and only got better so think he will have another great season. We'll see how important Poles thinks having a legit #1 CB is after next season. Shit he might build the front 7/DL so dominant that we can get by without having a star like JJ on one side.

It's kinda funny to hear some say they want to make JJ prove that his contract year wasn't a fluke yet are going to be the same to say we should sign FAs like Josh Allen or Justin Madubuike when they've had the same contract year developments...

According to PFF, Madubuike did have his best year but it wasn't great by their grading standards, so i'm not sure what to make of that. Anyway, your point stands there. Josh Allen on the other hand seems to have been pretty damn good from the jump even though he still turned in a great year this year.

If we had the option of franchise tagging Madubuike alongside Johnson then i'd want to do that.

Not sure, but are the top 5 CBs salaries combined and then averaged for a tagged CB's salary? Isn't that's how the tag pay is arrived?

Don’t know about that. JJ is pretty good.
Agreed. But one might argue that these rookies are better than JJ was at the end of his rookie season. I personally think they should sign JJ.

I say do the same they did with Fuller. Let him test the market while the Bears maintain control to match.

I stand by the caution of paying a bundle to a player after their best season was during a contract year. Franchise or Transition his ass and tell him to wow us again.

Madubuike had a decent year last year. There was a appreciable climb from years 2 to 3.

Josh Allen the OLB has had a pretty good 4 years

Madubuike has a PFF score of 63.6, very similar to the what @remy keeps referring to when talking about JJ.

I don't trust PFF scores as the be all end all.

His stats show a steady increase in sacks and total pressures from year 2 to 3 and then 3 to 4.

I'd say transition tag?? But, they don't want to lose a top tier CB without a replacement & do have the money now. Maybe get a discount if more front-loaded? But is he really worth top 5 $$$ for the duration of a new contract???

IF ONLY there was some way to gain some multiple 1st & 2nd Rd. picks to save $20mil per year, per rookie starter at premium positions like CB, WR, EDGE, etc...(nevermind *cough* "QB reset" nonsense, maybe in 2 years *cough.) 😅
