Not really shocking. Had fallen off the wagon @ year ago and was struggling with sobriety after being sober from drugs for 23 years. Agee he was a gifted and talented actor though.

Personally haven't been keeping up with his day to day sobriety or drug use, so it was a shock to me. :eek:rcs-buttshake:

I just read the news article and the brief bio of his recent life...seemed the least I could do.

Not only was he great, but he was versatile. Think about how many different roles he took on, and played them to a tee. Very underrated actor in my eyes. He was a guy that could be placed in any role, and he would flourish.

Yeah, blah blah blah, you're just saying that because he's dead now... but seriously, it's true. It's the guys like Hoffman and Ledger that really take acting to a new level. Very few can do that. I think DiCaprio, Bale, De Niro are other guys that fit that mold. I don't think Hoffman or Ledger ever reached that much popularity as those three, but they were just as talented.

hoffman was a better overall character actor than both bale and dicaprio. hard to reach de niro status as memorable performances but hoffman was getting close for sure. ledger would have surpased dicaprio and certainly bale. and i dont even dislike bale or dicaprio i just agree that hoffman was far more versatile. actually probably more versatile than de niro in my opinion....blasphamy? i dont think so...de niro has classic performances but they arent that big of stretches from one another when you look at it. most of de niros memorable performances he played a criminal mind a gangster of some sorts or a pschopath ( which he always nails by the way) less one liked his performance in awakenings...which i did not!!

but at the same time indy films allow actors to really flourish and hoffman was certainly an indy actor at hart. the few big budget films he was in he did really well but his indy films are my favorite of his.

supporting actor in bull shit hollywood billboard bus stop films....but yes good in the majority of them. massive leading actor in a large number of indy films where he owned.

i a tually have never seen Capote so i cant comment on it. have never been interested in seeing the film but i hope that the film he won an oscar for isnt the film that he is remembered by because his body of work in the unrecognized indy film world is massive. he pretty much could be seen as one of those who brought slightly more attention to the indy film scene through the years. i find that important.

The only role I really remember him in is Boogie Nights. I also seen Capote and honestly I just didn't care for the movie, found it boring, I cannot speak for the accuracy of it though.

I think his role in the Big Lebowski or maybe Cold Mountain would be my favorites for him. I haven't seen The Master yet, but plan too soon.

Off the radar was "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" is very good, with Ethan Hawke and Marissa Tomei. And to Marissa Tomei fans she has some surprisingly "Ahem" revealing scenes. :character-willie:

He was brilliant in Syndocoche New York, but that movie is confusing as hell. Also, Happiness, a movie almost no one else has seen. It's fantastic but is pretty disturbing in it's honesty.

I punched my very good friend after he suggested this movie and he had already seen it. He, punched the person that told him to watch it. I was punched when I also told 2 other buddies to watch.

Usually when a guy like this dies early people come out of the woodwork to overstate the roles and impact that a person had on their profession, but I think in this case, it's all true. They guy was truly incredible at his craft.
