Usually when a guy like this dies early people come out of the woodwork to overstate the roles and impact that a person had on their profession, but I think in this case, it's all true. They guy was truly incredible at his craft.

I agree. He really WAS quite talented. Heath Ledger too.

Paul "Pedophile" Walker? Maybe not so much. He WAS very pretty though...

Ledger "got there" in his last few roles.

i can't say some of his earlier work blew me away. When I think great acting, "A Knights Tale" isn't exactly what comes to mind. He was adequate in The Patriot, I don't think he really showed off some real acting chops until Brokeback Mountain and Dark Knight. Admittedly I haven't seen everything he was in, but I have at least seen 6+ films hes been in.

I was talking to Supra yesterday and agreed Philip Seymour Hoffman is a very similar actor to Paul Giamatti, in that they are generally amazng supporting actors (although Giamatti owned as the lead role in the John Adams HBO mini-series.)

The first time I remember PSH, he played the creepy *** kid who wanted him some Dirk Diggler action in Boogie Nights. Off topic but that movie reminds me of William H. Macy playing the dis-respected, humiliated husband in that movie.

Shame, I enjoyed his work in pretty much every thing I've seen him in.

A favourite scene

i think the comparison to giamatti is fair. another guy like hoffman who has a huge resume of leading rolls in indy films and lower budget films. american splender is giamattis best performance. he brought it home in that film!!

I think you could add Steve Buscemi to the list of great supporting actors that only get lead roles in indy movies, Boardwalk Empire being the exception. I think one thing in common with a lot of great supporting actors is that they don't have the good looks of the actors that get repeat lead roles, with the exception being comedians.

Agree. Yet another guy who has never deserved full due respect for his career thus far. I don't watch boardwalk empire but glad he is getting some recognition for it even though I keep hearing the show has slowed down to a snails pace the last couple seasons. I agree also on the bigger budget films casting and writing parts for the good looks. Personally that became old years ago and is why I am more drawn to the indy film scene now where i find more relatability with the characters and story lines. No disrespect to those who prefer the big budget films it is all subjective of course at the end of the day. I still like a few big box office films and always will. Obviously independent film makers don't have the budget to be knocking out Batman movies with Ledger as The Joker (which is one of my favorite protagonist acting performances in a long long time..i can watch that performance everyday and it never gets old)

Of course like you said comedies are a different story. That's probably because comedians themselves are often writing the scripts for the bigger budget comedy films and the comedic actors are more involved in that process.

Buscemi's best role was in "Fargo", hands down, no competition, not even close.

Was awesome in it. I'll put his rolls in Trees Lounge and Ghost World after that roll in Fargo. Not as creepy as in Fargo but creepy none the less in different ways. Oh shit what about Danny in Big Labowski? Classic roll also. Steve might actually be ahead of Phillip Seymour Hoffman on my personal favorites list now that I think about it more.

Yeah, but Buscemi did play in more crap movies than PSH. Not that he was bad in them, just that the movies were bad.

Hoffman immersed himself in every role. He didn't consider a bit part an excuse to not be excellent. And when he was a lead he was completely amazing. And he really wasn't afraid of any type of role. Which is such a rare thing. He found the humanity in even the creepiest characters. He didn't care if you liked his characters, he wanted an audience to understand them.

And his work with PT Anderson verges on Scorcese-De Niro working relationship status.

Magnolia

Punch Drunk Love

Boogie Nights

The Master

Flawless

The Big Lebowski (that laugh is such a fantastic character bit)

The Talented Mr. Ripley

Happiness

I mean, I could go on and on. There wasn't a role that he didn't excel in. I think he only would have done more to impress.

Great role for him.

Reservoir Dogs, Tree's Lounge, Ghost World were good roles for him too.
