Not only was he great, but he was versatile. Think about how many different roles he took on, and played them to a tee. Very underrated actor in my eyes. He was a guy that could be placed in any role, and he would flourish.</p>

Just compare him in Capote to Punch-Drunk Love to Before the Devil Knows you're Dead to the the Big Lebowski to Hard Eight to Boogie Nights to The Talented Mr. Ripley. (Still need to see The Master and Doubt).</p>

RE: character actors, Besides Hoffman and Buschemi, I like the work of John Torturro, John Goodman, Don Cheadle and <span>Luis Guzmán</span>. They'll seem to have an incestuous relationship working with the likes of the Coen Brothers, Steven Soderbergh and PT Anderson. </p>
