Tigers Inquired On Darwin Barney: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

We know from this that there is at least some interest by the Tigers in both Barney and Garza. The Tigers are currently one game under .500 and 4.5 back of the Sox in the AL Central. We can gauge desperation etc. later but the scenario is this:

Past Verlander, the Tigers need a more consistent starter. Garza can be that starter despite pitching like shit the past few starts.

Barney is a plus-defender and can be used as a throw-in to sweeten the pot. He may also be a potential offensive upgrade despite moving to the tougher league.

You send Garza and Barney to the Tigers. What do you expect in return? I think the cost control and the youth involved could be enough to snag a good- to elite-prospect back. The speculative part of it is the level of desperation involved. The Tigers are certainly within striking distance and we know that the owner okayed a ridiculous deal for Prince Fielder so the emphasis is likely on winning now as opposed to a couple years from now.

Discussion...go! :buttrock:

You hold out for Castellanos or Turner. And a couple of other upside guys besides the centerpiece.

We'd have to get Hill back and then we could get Verlander and Fielder for him.

if the tigers are that stupid to give up cas in a garza deal shame on them. they should look at other options closer to the deadline when the pretenders decide to sell. there are reasons why the two smartest teams that control the young talent decided to get rid of him. better them bing stupid and getting garza than hamels, greinke and others who will be on the market.

Yeah, but we already established that Hot Stove Cubbies is on acid.

And we know the odds of getting Castellanos in a deal is about as high as Hot Stove Cubbies being right.

I think if the Cubs want to fill their pitching needs then there's something that can still be done.

So if they were to do this, they would go best player first (Castellanos) and then scale it back if Detroit balks and try to get a couple upside arms back for Garza (plus Barney). Can't get hung up on just the one prospect although he'd be nice to have for sure.

Yeah I could see a deal for the arms that the Tigers and I would include a reclamation project like Porcello as a possibility as well.

If that and the Hot Stove Cubbies rumors came true then this rebuild would be mighty quick.

3 years instead of projected 5?

these guys all have to pan out. im not sure what every fan thinks, but from listening to clowns on the radio a lot of fans actually dont understant the details of rebuilding and assume that a top spec is a sure thing. they would need to hit on every spec, and spend money in FAcy to make this move along faster. if they trade garza than it shows they are in it to take their time and do it right. if they keep him, than you may see them spend money

At this point given the lack of extension talks (at least reported ones since the Cubs play things so close to the chest) one has to assume that Garza is gone so I'm inclined to believe the rebuild is going to take five years. Any less would be a combination of luck and smarter baseball than usual. What's also possible is that they start trading multiple prospects for the missing pieces later on.

Tigers have such other holes (second base, outfield and DH), I can't believe they'll shot their wad for a starter.
