So would I. Ship off Barney with him, just to sweet the pot. Add in a combination of Chris Reed and Ethan Martin from the Dodgers, and you might have something to build around pitching wise to go with the influx of positional prospects.

When he represents an offensive and defensive upgrade for the team and has four years of control after this season I think that is pot sweetening. (The Tigers have been interested in Barney from multiple reports btw).

His OPS is above average for 2B and is better than what they have. Which might be why the Tigers have already been linked to Barney amongst other 2B.

The defense and the club control is important too as we've talked about before. The defense in particular is very important for Detroit considering their infield has been hemorrhaging runs all season.

Actually Barney's OPS is below average. I hadn't checked in a while, but it has dipped noticeably the past couple of weeks. The defense and club control make him attractive to a number of clubs as Rice points out. This is the definition of sweetening the pot. His value isn't amazing, but it adds a nice cheap upgrade for Detroit to make the deal more attractive.

Even if the asking price is steep, the Yankees have several prospects that could be used for trade bait. As B/R’s Doug Mead writes, Dellin Betances is New York’s best trade asset since he hasn’t lived up to the expectations of the Yankees. He also mentions that Manny Banuelos could be up for grabs as well.

If general manager Brian Cashman packaged Betances, Banuelos and maybe a hitting prospect or two, that could intrigue Cubs GM Jed Hoyer enough to part with Garza. The Cubs are trying to acquire as many prospects as possible to rebuild for the future, and Betances and Banuelos still have plenty of time to figure things out.

(Updated 12:31) The Tigers will not discuss 3B Nick Castellanos but may be willing to part with RHP Jacob Turner and Futures Game all-star C Rob Brantly, as well as LHP Casey Crosby and RHP and closer prospect Bruce Rondon. While I'd like Castellanos (who wouldn't?), there is surely a pretty good package that could be made for the players they are making available, though it would have to be headlined by Turner to even get the Cubs attention.

A package that included Banuelos, a polished LHP, and Betances, a 6'8" power throwing RHP, would be a great start in the Garza talks and if they added a couple of developmental hitters I would be sold.

Maybe include 3B Dante Bichette Jr.

This is the most agreeable

Source #3: The Cubs can land Nick Castellanos and other prospects with a Garza package but have to include either Josh Vitters or Junior Lake in the deal plus more player. Such as Darwin Barney.

Cubs Send

Matt Garza
Josh Vitters
Darwin Barney

Tigers Send

3B Nick Castellanos
LHP Casey Crosby
RHP Bruce Rondon
C Rob Brantley

Having Rizzo and Castellanos on the corners for the next 10 years would be nice.

That's certainly :fap: worthy but a bit unrealistic in my opinion.

Change Rondon to Turner and you have a deal. Giving up 1 and 1/2 years of Garza and two cost controlled ML players in a deal that could help them win a WS without getting Turner back would make me :puke:
