I think you're a pretty nice guy Silence. I would've told them good luck finding someone to work for me in the near future. I've only given two weeks notice once, because I just don't give a ****.

You took time off for school. You decided that you weren't ready. The right decision is two choices. Keep studying and take the test later or go back to work (at least call and explain things without being"caught"). You did nt choose either of those.

That said it sound like you wanted out. Do you have enough capital to start your own place?

Explain that I need to come back for the 5 minutes left on my shift. I left 15 minutes early. I didnt know that once I am off their clock that I had to explain my life ongoings to them.

It's that you left to take a test which you didn't do. That's false pretense. You have to see it from the business perspective.

I think that would depend on what the business's policy is regarding leave. I know some places what you say is correct--if they care why you have to bail then it could matter.

Where I work it wouldn't as long as (a) it's approved beforehand (i.e. my boss says it's okay), (b), the time is billed appropriately (personal leave/sick/vacation or comp time), and (c) everything is covered. The reason I'd have to bail is irrelevant unless it's a case where it's illness/injury of you or a family member, death in the family, or the like, which falls under a different regime in which approval is almost always granted.

A co-worker this past week had to bail early. Our boss didn't care what the reason was (even though she said she had to pick up her kid from school). Now, if, say, her kid got detention and she still bailed early anyway to hit up the local boozer before she deals with her kid...our boss still wouldn't care. Either way it's entered into her timecard the same.

LOL. You'd have a point if it were half a day. Even an hour. 15 minutes early after he got everything prepared for the next shift and had it pre-approved? It gets to splitting hairs. If he didn't go straight to the bar, which he says he didn't, then it doesn't matter what he did, because he would've been off work by that point anyway. The boss was being an asshole, and so were the douchebag co-workers that ratted him out.

It matters because it's what you said. SilenceS works for a place that needs a reason to let you out early.

Have to do what you have to do...
Was in an interview recently and could tell early on the guy doing it was a real pain to work for...
As things went on this became more prevalent, so in the middle I asked who my supervisor would be...
He said... "That would be me"...
I said... That's enough for me... thank you for your time but I'm done here...

Nice to not need work... in the old days I'd have bit my tongue and carried on...

Don't sweat it S... you will find something that fits before you know it

They approved his early release and he actually studied with the intention of taking the test. After 3 PM, it's inconsequential what he does with his day because he would've been out by that time anyway. Again, it was 15 minutes. You'd have a point if it was at least an hour. Not to mention that he, again, had everything set up for the next shift, so he didn't even leave without having his work for the day done. The boss was being a micromanaging prick.

ijph,

If it's anytime you are being let out early it matters if it matters to them. Not sure why you keep missing that point.

ijph,

No, it doesn't always matter, especially if it's only a few minutes. Again, him going to the bar after his shift would've already been over is inconsequential. It's pretty stupid to think that someone would leave a whole quarter of an hour early just to go out and get the party started at 2:45 PM, especially if they showed no tendency for such behavior in the past (which we can't honestly speak of in this case).

On a separate note, whoever ratted him out is a douchebag and a half and there's no reason to work with people like that, or his boss that isn't understanding of the situation at hand, especially for a longtime and loyal employee. They were not showing him the same loyalty he showed them, and should consider themselves lucky he's even giving two weeks.

EDIT: If Silence had a history of leaving early, then yeah, this played out as it would pretty much anywhere.

It matters not who ratted, etc. What matters is from the business perspective integrity is lost.

Well, what business integrity. I didnt realize I could take the test later until I read the e-mail after I left. I left with the intention of taking the test which again was 15 minutes early. I am never late and will work off the clock to help them out if Im at the restaurant. The owner knows he messed up and keeps trying to reverse psychology into me staying. I dont miss work. I have never called in without a 24 hour window. I asked permission to leave last week. Do you think I would have asked permission a week before hand to hit the bar 15 minutes early? lol
