Not really. Unless it's absurdly long. And honestly, as long as it's a reasonably short time frame you can just lie and say something about how you couldn't time the change over perfectly etc etc. If it's anything more than 3 months as a very general rule of thumb it's a little odd but anything less than that is pretty easily explainable..whether truthful or not

Sure.... I just know based off experience with the hiring process where I work.... and I have helped hire like 6 people over my 2.5 years here, gaps in employment do bring up questions and if you are young and have a short history it brings even bigger questions.

I am not saying it is a deal breaker or it is impossible to overcome with some talking, but it is a question mark I personally would not want to have on my employment history which is why I do not recommend quitting with no new job lined up and/or quitting without 2 weeks notice.

That's what I'm doing now actually. Lots of work, but pretty rewarding.

That is really cool, if you don't mind me asking, what sort of work does the business do?

Same here. A couple months I'm "meh". Anything more I'll ask and turn on the BS detectors. In the end though I'm worried about past performance.

I have a few things going on the startup side. One in the automotive space. Another in medical marijuana / vaporization. And another in skin care. Also still own a consulting business.

I can't see a reason why going to grad school would be a negative

I changed my career after 12+ years without having something else lined up ... Now I had $$$ saved up, but if you're miserable in your current situation it will no doubt affect your daily life in a negative way.

Lazy fucking hipsters.... I would assume you were hanging out in a hipster coffee shop during that entire gap and then I would tell you I hated hipsters before it was cool to hate hipsters. :troll:

I will say this.... if you are miserable at your job and look for a new one to move on to.... do not let it slip that you are miserable and want out.... its like blood in the water for them if they want to hire you and lowball you. Just say the same bullshit..... you wanna move on to something new.... you want to learn new things and grow in to a bigger role somewhere else..... you want a new role which has some room to move within the company..... anything but saying you want out cause you are miserable.

My situation was a bit different than most I'd say Ares, my career had me working 6-8 months a year, but those months were spent away from home. It was a fine life for my wife and I as we were used to it, but then we had our daughter .... That changed everything for me and I wanted to be home everyday, so after my wife hit a decent job, I peeled right out of there and have never looked back ;)

I do miss the generous salary I had though ...

Find what you love doing and start a business. Working for yourself has it's up and downs but if it goes bad it's on you or you can blame Obama.

That’s a great idea but it’s much easier said than done. I’ve actually thought about it before but I just can’t afford the risk. I need the stability of my 9-5 job.

I’ve even had a few ideas about different businesses. Then I start looking into them, find out someone else already tried it in my town and failed miserably.

Honestly, I would love to own a campground. But that requires a whole lot more money than I could ever come up with. I’m seeing the owners of the one I stay out now struggle to keep the place running simply because they can’t afford it.

Yeah that's definitely a unique situation.... I was definitely speaking more to the standard salary employee who wants out.... look for a new job before you resign and ideally get/accept an offer before you resign.... and while you are looking make sure not to tell future employers you hate your current job. I made that mistake and they tried to offer me 3k less in salary to move over and work for them.... I said no and they "generously" offered to match my salary at the time..... so I took it and decided to use it as leverage for a counter offer..... figured the worst that would happen is I would move jobs for the same salary.... instead I got to move up, different boss, more money. But IMO I got lucky it turned out that way.

It's done. After a lot of thought and a heavy heart, I informed my boss of my resignation. He was bummed and stated multiple times that he'd be more than willing to help with anything I need as far as references or even returning at a later date. I'm excited for new opportunities and a job I don't despise every minute of.

Can't tell you, op, I've only ever worked for myself, well except for a couple of years as a Nursing Home Administrator. I own my own business with guys working under me, that is the only way I will ever roll. Unless, someone wants to drop me a dump truck load of funds to work for them.

Reading this thread, I do like what Ares had to say. Work out the two week notice, do it right. It won't mean much to your current employer but it will to the potential future employer.
