Question

Does Motorhead belong in the genre of punk? Or are they left only to be in the metal genre? I would actually put them in both and they go on my list of influential punk bands. Lemmy is kind of punk ya'all!!

Agree. Definately Punk/Metal fusion that was the fore runner to other bands.

Honestly I would consider them a little of both--Kinda like GWAR even though GWAR moved definelty more metal post "Violence has Arrived"

One of Devin Townsend's side projects, "Punky Brüster" got that Punk/Metal hybrid as well while making fun of both genres (as well as making fun of Green Day).

Mötorhead though can simply be classified as "kicks all ass" regardless of where you choose to classify them.

If we were adding 2nd/3rd wave ska

/punk as far as my selections

for sure Sublime (considering this band is what introduced me to ska, punk and reggae and is pretty much the foundation for 80% of my music collection) Before them I was pretty much the typical, I listen to whatever is popular on the radio at the time.

Specials

The (English) Beat

Clash

Madness

Common Rider (Jesse Michaels band following Operation Ivy's break up)

Other than sublime I was never really big into the other big ska acts of the 90's like Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big FIsh or even No Doubt for that matter. I think Suicide Machines and Catch 22 are the only other 90's ska acts I actually own any music to.

Right now I am pretty much heavily into first wave ska/skinhead reggae (Desmond Dekker, The Skatalites and such) and am pretty much buying up as much of the stuff as I can get my hands on.

69 eyes doesn't belong with the Misfits. Way to produced and processed. Punk they are not.

That said, I was never big into punk. I understand the role they played and what it stands for.

I can't rate them, I will say most of the lists I have seen I would agree. Misfits, Ramones, Sex Pistols, I think they should be 123 to whomevers choosing.

I am more metal. I will say this.....as far as metal bands go, the most "punk" metal band ever was Nailbomb. End of discussion.

Sonic Youth is a good pick for sure. Another group like Suicidal Tendencies who have been thrown around genre to genre. Sonic Youth were def a new punk wave whom tweaked shit and were highly influential.

Now that's an interesting group. I love them. They just squeak into my category of punk. I think they were probably the north american group that brought a more poetic position to punk culture through their music esp lyrically. I think that is what takes them out of the genre for most people not to mention their more complex compositions and a more polished sound, but I stick em in there. They were def counter culture in that punk essence and it certainly showed up in how they approached the performance end of it all. Great group. Smart group. Distinct Group. Remain In Lights still blows me away everytime I listen to it. Incredible album. Brian Eno..what can you say? Guy has produced some outstanding albums.

Here is another group that I would put in the genre of Punk as far as their earlier stuff goes esp their first studio album. WEEN!!! But they pretty much have covered all genres of music through their long time together and probably even invented some new genres along the way which can not be described. God Ween Satan had smells of punk through it. Brown punk!! I would be interested in knowing what Paul thinks of that being another ween head such as I.

Toots and the Maytals. Much copied/covered but never equalled IMO.

The Body Snatchers are another 70s/80 UK Ska band worth a listen.

My problem with them is they had flashes of punk genius and then would be more commercial. While I do not dislike them as a band, they really were not front runners, genre changers, etc., IMO.
