Cards now 6 games back with 13 to play. If the Cubs go just 7-6 to get to 90 wins, the Cards would have to win out with a 13-game winning streak to force a tie. Brewers are 4 games back with 13 to play. Assuming again the Cubs go 7-6, they'll need to win 11/13 to force a tie at 90 wins.

It was a good weekend for the Cubs.

I'd like to see the magic number down to 6 by the time we head up to Milwaukee on Thursday. That pretty much sets up the Brewers as needing a sweep to have a chance and the likelihood of them sweeping us twice is not very strong. We go up against two good pitchers in Archer and Snell in TB but the Cubs are the better team and have to play like it. Meanwhile I don't think Milwaukee will sweep the Pirates. Damn, this past weekend was huge.

538 has the Cubs with a 94% chance of making the playoffs and a 92% chance of winning the division as of this morning.

Just need to avoid a lengthy losing streak and they'll be fine...

Because Joe wants him to? Seems to get away with everything else. Are they not staying with Tseng for another start or possibly wanting to try Tseng out of the pen for the playoffs? Start Monty for a few innings then throw Tseng second so he kinda feels the bullpen angle?

I don't know, its baseball. I see teams have a lineup specially written for a left hander on the mound, see a starter have a short outing and see the team put another lefty in like its a gentlemans agreement. You would think you would blow that lineup up by putting the righty in.

I think Tseng start was just an award for his good season in Iowa ..
It was against a terrible Mets team who played a few guys that just came up from their AAA team.
So......

Rays a better team all around , so Monty the guy cause Arrieta not ready yet

Really wasn't about Tseng. Read they are pushing Lester back a game. Has the feel of a push vs Archer.

They are lining Jake up vs the Crew's series.

IMO I'm about winning right now. I like Tseng but you don't push out a maybe in a play off race.

Nobody rewarded Tseng. Monty was needed in the pen, and Arietta was out.

They want righties vs Milwaukee.

Who is "getting away with" something? Maddon?

Yeah, the guy hates a manager that in 3 years will around 300 games, 3 playoff spots and a WS. Fire him!!! Just way too successful....

I'm just going by what Maddon said / did when Tseng came in to Chicago to get his POTY award and Maddon told him congrats and he was gonna start the next day..
So.. just my opinion in thinking that was Maddon and management way of rewarding him by giving him a start ..

Also, Monty ended up pitching that game after Tseng left..
So....it was like Tseng starts and Monty will take over after he leaves..
So basically keeping Monty on his schedule to pitch tomorrow on 5th day..

Not sure if that last part was directed to me but I didn't say anything about anyone getting away with something..

Well....think about it. Nobody is starting a guy from AAA as a reward unless they clinched the night before and the team is hung over.

They pitched him because they thought he was their best option at that time.

Does any team in baseball fold up tent at the end of August quite like the Pittsburgh Pirates?

True but were talking about Maddon ...

Why would he of been best option over Monty.. obviously not starting Monty that day wasn't to keep him in pen considering he came in that game and he pitching tomorrow on regular 4 day rest..

Plus like I said it was against a bad Mets team who were playing AAA guys that were called up..
So basically he faced a couple guys he pitched against in AAA..

Anyhow that just my thoughts..

Go Cubs
Go Pirates
