I know Bears fans like to be emo and overthink everything, but this really isn't that hard.
  1. Beggars can't be choosers. Myles isn't going to be given away to anyone just to appease him. The Browns will want to maximize their benefits in a trade. So that said, they'll narrow down options and the best option there may not be otherwise considered a SB contender before the trade.
  2. Bears were widely considered to be an up and coming team last year and will get tagged with that again this year (right or wrong). This will be especially true if we get some high end FAs (like Trey) and cause we've added Ben Johnson and a good staff. It wouldn't shock anyone if the Bears are labelled a team to be very improved.
  3. Teams every single year make a flip. Not all the teams in the playoffs last year made it this year... the teams in it this year won't all be there next year. See the Commanders. A year ago, anyone calling them a contender would've been laughed at.
Does any of the above mean Myles would agree? Obviously not... he's his own person with his own thoughts. However, it's not unreasonable to believe adding a player of his caliber to a defense that was performing at a high level last year with an up-and-coming offense with one of the most respected offensive minds in the league, would be an intriguing idea. That also doesn't mean we have to be favorites. All he should need to believe is we can make the playoffs and have a chance. What he needs now is the opportunity to be in meaningful games.
What I saw in Garrett's interview with Rich Eisen is a guy that knows the Browns are screwed and wont be competing for a championship any time soon. He said he understood that he can't choose where he is going but hopes he can go somewhere that has a chance to win.

I think he would be able to see that the Bears have been underachieving the last two seasons with Flus and a player like Garrett could dramatically change their outlook.

I never said I was against making the move for Garrett, but KC re-signing their own player after they have won the SB is still different than trading a high 1st and third AND paying him a huge extension at the same time.

As mentioned elsewhere, getting a guy like Trey Hendrickson for a much cheaper trade might be the smarter move.
If you were guaranteed to get a HoF player at 10, would you worry that you eventually have to pay him 30m? Garrett is like drafting a HoF player at 10.

I have no problem going after Hendrickson but given the Bengals likely want to compete in 2025 I think it is more likely they extend him. By contrast, the Browns are fucked right now.

Bengals have to keep their QB happy and he wants them to keep Tee Higgins AND Jamarr Chase. I think Trey will be available.

It's not the $30M it's the top 10 pick+extra pick+$30M combo that gives me pause. Especially since we are banking on a guy that's 29 to remain healthy or make a full recovery in the event he gets injured.

It's a huge swing and gamble that could potentially blow up and set them back for a long time if he gets hurt

He also wants them to keep Trey so not sure that really matters.

My point was if you draft someone at 10 that is a HoF then you used the 10th pick plus will have to pay said player 30m eventually.

So the only difference here of course is you are getting an older but known HoF player for 10 and having to pay a lot right away but small price to pay for a known HoFer.

Well you are also missing the benefit of the first 5 years of said HoFer's career when they weren't making anywhere close to $30M

Scroll to about 2:30 minute mark.

If Burrow has a choice of his two WR's versus the 30year old DE, I don't think it will be a hard choice for him despite being a good teammate in support of Hendrickson.

They can't afford all three +Burrow if they want to win in the AFC. I believe Hendrickson is available and that he's playing at a level above Mack and a bit below Garrett.

They'll probably appease Burrow, but seems like the wrong move. I'd probably tell my highly paid QB and soon to be highly paid WR (Chase) that they're going to have to figure it out without Higgins cause they are investing HEAVILY in the financial success of the offense at the detriment of the defensive talent. The financials there would be so badly skewed to one side of the ball.

Btw... I wonder if they have any more naming rights to sell off so they can pay Chase and Higgins?

If the Bears can keep all of this years draft capital, and then trade for Hendrickson for next years 2nd (or even 1st) and then pay him the $30M for 3yrs...

I'm on the fence about that being a worse option than getting Myles but losing #10 and next years 3rd?

I already said you have to pay them right away which is being contrasted with a rookie being on a contract. The point was that is a small price to play to get a known HoF player vs drafting someone who could be a HoFer or who could be a bust.

I think Burrow should be smart enough to grasp they aren't winning shit if their D sucks. If he is as good as he thinks he is then he can make due without Higgins. Hendrickson is obviously the smarter move.

Well if nothing else we could always swap picks and move back from 10 to 17 and let them have Jeanty before the Cowgirls take him at #12.

I would be on board with that

Hendrickson is only making $15M this year, if I'm him I immediately do the same thing Garrett is doing.

I haven't read this thread so I'm probably missing something but we aren't a team that can afford to spend our draft capitol on Garrett. Sure, we need a blue chip player opposite Sweat and he would be that but we also desperately need (as everyone and their dog knows) to address our Oline. And you do that with young players in the draft, not just by trying to get a few free agents. We need to do this because we need to think long term when it comes to this line.

We HAVE to pick two guys for our Oline in our first 40 picks for that reason as I see it. We have to.

That's been the Achilles heal of this team for so freaking long and in a long term way, we need to use this draft to address that. We began to with Wright and we have to go all in this year to further that.

1. I don't agree that 1 pick this year and 1 pick next year equates to using all of our draft capital. I think it's more than fair as long as it's not two firsts.

2. I am OUT on Braxton Jones, but apparently 90% of this board is convinced he is good enough. There are no guards in this draft that are so good they demand being a 1st rounder and taking a center in the top 50 of this draft will be a reach.

So unless you agree that Braxton must be replaced as I do, or think the Bears won't sign any OL in free agency... making the move for Garrett doesn't stop this team from improving the oline with both second round picks if needed.

Cincinnati can afford all of them for 2025. Extending Hendrickson or Chase would lower their cap hits. And they have $49m in cap space right now with a few potential cuts to free up more.

Even signing Higgins to a $108m/4y deal would probably only add about $15m to their 2025 cap.

Cincy's problem is more doing all 3 pretty much means they cant do much else beyind the draft so basically it would be bringing back a team that missed the playoffs without any real improvement.

They may just be better off tagging Higgins and trading him as they really need to improve that D.

Yeah, I get your argument. But we also have to have flexibility going into the draft with our #1 in my opinion. If Poles thinks there's a left tackle in that first round that he adores and can help this team for the next decade, he has to be able to go after him.

Our Oline is what's more important it actually having an offense that's a weapon for the first time in forever, instead of a joke.

And I don't want to **** around with taking away that #1 this year or next.

Like I said, I see where you're coming from, we desperately need another edge, it would change everything on that side of the ball. But I don't think this team is nearly complete enough to give away our #1s.

But they won just as many games in the last 5 weeks as the Bears did the entire season. The Bengals had a poor start to the year but still rallied. If they bring everyone back and have one draft, they are still legit contenders IMO.

Yeah, I was going to compile a list of 'CCS pain points' of things that I think are common sense yet are also huge minority opinions on this board...

*Braxton Jones isn't very good
*Darnell Wright hasn't lived up to expectations
*Caleb Williams had a disappointing rookie year
*Keenan Allen didn't add much
*Ryan Poles is a bad GM
*Tyrique Stevenson has to really improve

The problem is Chiefs, Ravens, Bills, etc will all have one draft as well and all have comparable offenses and much better defenses.

Thanks for pointing this out.

What are your suggestions for improving the situation?

(A serious response would be nice, but would require some thought.)

✅*Braxton Jones isn't very good - Zero argument in fact he is bad.

✅*Darnell Wright hasn't lived up to expectations - Not very good but all hope isn't lost and he still has potential to be really good.

*Caleb Williams had a disappointing rookie year - Too much generational hype, but still above average for a #1 pick rookie QB so I'll focus on the bright side.

*Keenan Allen didn't add much - I think most would agree, but that can be said for every player on the team.

:censored:*Ryan Poles is a bad GM - In a strictly binary perspective... Yes not good, but there are a decent amount of positives and he hasn't ruined the team or made horrendous moves that set the organization in a hole.

:cautious:*Tyrique Stevenson has to really improve - He's a good young player that is still developing, he may be immature and cocky but if he played for a better team people wouldn't be so hard on a second year player. I think he is as good or better at his job than Kyler Gordon or Brisker and a big reason why the Bears secondary is considered a strength.
