Report: Stafford's future with Lions 'very much in doubt'

We know general manager Martin Mayhew and president Tom Lewand are gone. And head coach Jim Caldwell could be out the door this off-season as well.

But what about Matthew Stafford?

NFL.com reporter Ian Rapaport said today that he was told that the quarterback's future with the Detroit Lions is "very much in doubt" as the Lions began cleaning out the front office amid a dismal 1-7 season.

"He has no guaranteed money after this year," Rapaport said. "Now, if they do cut him (entering 2016), it would cost $11 million of dead money, essentially money they're paying to have him not on the roster."

Stafford is making $9.5 million this year, then $17 million in 2016 and $16.5 million in 2017. His cap hit in 2016, however, is $22.5 million, then $22 million in 2017.

And then there's his play on the field. Stafford ranks 24th in the NFL in passer rating (84.1) and has thrown just 13 touchdowns to go along with 11 interceptions, which ranks tied for 2nd-highest in the NFL. Furthermore, the Lions offense ranks 26th in the league in offensive yards per game (337.8) and 30th in points per game (18.6).

Rapaport shared some interesting nuggets about Stafford.

"There's a lot going on with Matthew Stafford now ... he was benched earlier in the year which, for a franchise quarterback, never happens," Rapaport said. "I'm also told that Joe Lombardi, the former offensive coordinator, was frustrated that he couldn't put enough on Stafford's plate, did not think he was able to handle it, was not taking as much control of the offense as the coaching staff wanted.

"In fact, new offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter actually had to simplify things for Stafford. All of which, in part, leads to the conclusion that Stafford's days in Detroit are very much numbered."

Stafford is the Lions' No. 1 overall pick from 2009, the first draft pick of the Mayhew era, and the Lions have spent considerable resources trying to build the offense around him. Stafford's career stats: 60.1% passing for 23,797 yards, 144 touchdowns and 96 interceptions. His career passer rating is 83.7.

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford's future with the Lions is in doubt, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports via Brian Manzullo of the Detroit Free Press.

I think the Lions are cleaning house and Stafford should think of it as playing to show the next GM he deserves to stay. Of course none of that makes me feel good considering their one win so far was against us.

Jim Caldwell to remain as Lions' head coach

Jim Caldwell to remain as Lions' head coach

Thursday's gutting of the Detroit Lions won't include the team's embattled head coach.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Jim Caldwell has been informed that he will keep his job despite guiding the Lions to a 1-7 record, per a team source. Lions owner Martha Ford later confirmed that no changes will be made to the team's coaching staff.

Caldwell's status was in doubt after Ford fired general manager Martin Mayhew and team president Tom Lewand on Thursday.

In what a Lions source described to Rapoport as a "total wipeout" of the organization's leadership structure, Detroit's ownership has made it crystal clear that the woeful Lions are in for a comprehensive reboot.

Keeping Caldwell might have more to do with the lack of a trustworthy -- or willing -- interim leader. Outside of senior coaching assistant Gunther Cunningham, Detroit's staff has nobody with head-coaching experience. Linebackers coach Bill Sheridan and defensive line aide Jim Washburn have been around the block, but Caldwell likely lobbied to see it through.

We fully expect Caldwell to be looking for work after this wretched campaign in Detroit mercifully draws to a close.

How? He's the best quarterback in Lion's history.

Plus, drafting a rookie is both risky and pointless since there's a good chance he'll be a bust. They're better off sticking with him

The true question is, how many nuts can he store in those cheeks of his? Winter is coming.

I'd like to by a vowel - An A

Bazas

◦Located in the Aquitaine region, south of Gironde (60 km from Bordeaux, Arcachon 95 km and 185 km from Toulouse), Bazas is a town of 5000 inhabitants. It is surrounded on the north by the Bordeaux vineyards of Sauternes and Graves, and south by the vast Landes forest. All around her lies the territory of Bazadais that has retained its individuality and authenticity around the melting pot of a city Bazas.

Sorry but that is incorrect, we have a lovely parting gift for you. 2 tickets to an exciting WNBA game.

Wrong. He is the third best. Jon kitna is first followed by Barry Sanders. Lions will suck no matter what

Or show other GMs why he is a viable alternative. Would you blame him if he just wanted out of Detroit? The Lions are doing a complete re-build, again. What a shit storm.
