CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild informed the team on Monday that he is picking up his option to return for the 2011 season, according to a major league source.
The ultimate fate of Rothschild, who has worked under five managers during his nine-year run in Chicago, may depend on who becomes the next manager and how the coaching staff is put together. Hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo is the only other Cubs coach from last season's staff who has a contract for 2011. Jaramillo has two years remaining on his three-year deal.
Under Rothschild, the Cubs' team ERA was among the top-five lowest in the National League from 2007-2009. The Cubs have made three playoff runs during Rothschild's tenure.
Rothschild was the first manager of the Tampa Bay Rays from 1998-2001. Before that he was the pitching coach for the Florida Marlins from 1995-97. Rothschild was also a bullpen coach and then pitching coach under former Cubs manager Lou Piniella when both were with the Cincinnati Reds from 1990-93.
