There is some premium cope being passed around in here. When has a team traded away a 5th round draft pick for another teams backup lineman to remain a backup on his new team??

He's obviously the plan at Center.

FYI: The 5th round is exactly where you look to find quality backups and draft steals. If your GM can't even find his own depth pieces he sucks at his job.

This only makes sense if Bates is the starter, and if he is a good starter at center the trade is fine.
I actually wonder if this signals a move for Connor Williams. Bates can play center but his versatility offers a ton of value to be able to capably backup all three interior spots, all of which we've had issues with. That, and I'd hope Poles has grander visions for helping our Caleb than just Bates at center and still no reliable backups on the interior.

The Bears paid Dan Feeny $3.25M to back up the 3 IOL positions. I don't need to do an in-depth analysis for you. If you want to....go for it
This just shows the Bears suck at cap management with regards to their depth. Bates is currently the 25th highest paid guard in the NFL. That'll drop with FA, but still. That's IOL starter money.

Feeny was a top 40 paid guard which is dumb cap management.

If Bates starts at center or if they know Davis and/or Jenkins is utterly damaged goods, this trade makes sense. Let's hope it's the former.

UDFA, practice squad, OG turned C.

Cody Whitehair is a great center. We can ignore the deep center draft in '23.

I can kind of see the 5th for depth, it's better than trying to convince me trading down for a bunch of low round oline was doing something for offense but that likely a wasted pick when we don't have the picks to waste.
Hopefully he has a trade plan in place to make up for it.

5.4 million would have been the 9th highest cap hit on our team last year.

Bates is top 30 in the entire NFL in salary as a guard.

It's rather basic asset management in the NFL that you need to fill in your depth chart with dirt cheap players.

This makes no sense unless he's starting at center. Signing him in FA is one thing. Pissing away a mid round pick is silly though.

Poor job by Poles.
Well he’s ours now. Enjoy.

Teven Jenkins missed six games last year, 12 in the previous two years, Nate Davis missed six games last year, 11 in the previous two years, and Lucas Patrick missed two games last year, 14 in the previous two years. The Bears need a starting center and a high-end backup for the 3 IOL positions. Fixing the offensive line means more than just solidifying the starting 5. The Bears starters missed a combined 20 games last year.

If this guy can make it, then Bates has a chance….
If Bates had much of a chance he wouldn't have been on the Eagles practice squad or UDFA.

Think he fills the Cody Whitehair role. Versatile inside guy that can play any position
Sort of. Whitehair wasn't always a bad OG and if he wasn't an instant starter I don't remember him going through the practice squad first. Whitehair was also drafted, he didn't make it through 32 teams 7 times.
Could work but don't get your hopes up.
But he should fill the role Whitehair should've had more recently. And probably do it better.

Whitehair is a goner...
That's been a done deal.
That was paraphrasing what Poles said about Whitehair last year before the draft so he could ignore the position in the deep draft and make his HC happy.
We should have a real starting center drafted in '23 already.

Not sure, but I hope he knows how to false snap like Olin used to . . .
After one of the many NFL rule changes that were seemingly directed at making the Bears worse.
Before that he was fine.

An interesting question is going around Twitter.

We have all these supposed media experts flooding social media talking about how Caleb Williams to the Bears is a foregone conclusion, a done deal, Etc.

And you have a certain segment of fans defending these media types as insiders and beat reporters who would know more than anyone else.

So the interesting question to ponder is simply this:

If these Media Insiders are really that much in the know, why didn't they see the trade for Ryan Bates coming? And the best they can offer is that they didn't deem it important after the fact, when this is a guy who likely will be the Bears starting center on game one?

After round 1, Poles currently has all of 1 3rd and 2 4th round picks. I suspect Poles is holding onto Fields hoping for a top 50 or so trade. We'll know more in a couple weeks, once FA hits.
He is for sure looking to make some trades, no way he stays @ 5 picks since he is building thru the draft.

It’s a trade for a player on par with Lucas Patrick. No one is wasting their contacts time on a trade for a shitty player.

Yes the team with the 4th most cap space has dumb cap management lol. You are acting like they are giving him stupid money like they did with Danny T in 2020.

Could that be because the "insiders" are just making crap up?
Look at how many are playing both sides. Of course I can get the weather forecast right when I tell you it will be every possible type of weather.
