Where was I labeling him as that?
That he was specifically the second coming? No where. It was hyperbole to make the point that you failed to mention the fact that he has struggled in the past and there are some legitimate concerns about him as a SP (huge flyball percentage, decent but not great peripherals, etc.)

All I'm saying is that he has the potential to be top of the line.
And the counterpoint has to be that the odds of him being a top of the line guy aren't that great. There is a chance that he could put it all together, but the odds are as likely that he is what he is at this point.

It's an easy trade to make. Marshall is a nice asset.

Let's all put things into focus here. He is a specialist. He's good. He has value. Which it looks like as of today we've played our cards well.

I agree that getting a 24 year old SP with upside and two prospects for a reliever not named Rivera is a good deal.

Yeah, I'm eager to see which prospects the Cubs got. With the Reds trading two of their top prospects and Edinson Volquez to get Mat Latos, they definitely look like they're trying to win now. Hopefully they were nice enough to throw a decent prospect our way  .

I wouldn't hold out much hope for getting a top 10 prospect from their system. I was more hoping that the team would get one really nice prospect as opposed to two decent ones, but we won't know til it is announced.

Deal is good to go, pending physical

Sure, let's ruin the one strength our team had last year, sounds like a plan. Our other lefty options out of the 'pen have a combined ERA north of twelve-trillion. Hopefully, Travis Wood can come in and solidify a spot in the middle of the rotation. Anyone have an idea who the prospects might be?

Wow. This team is getting worse.... What the hell is going on? Can't wait til we trade Castro for some minor league coach.

 You guys are so right. Every1 else b dumb.

the point of trading for wood was for youth, basically setting up a young core for the future..which seems to be something that the cubs FO is hinting to

outside of marshall, our bullpen was not very good...marmol was awful, wood wasnt really great either(ya, i know this kind of makes your case for you...)

honestly one of our bigger strengths could have been power(meaning HRs and high base hitting) cubs had a relatively good OPS+ # of HRs over the course of the season....attributed to ramirez and soriano

wood also helps solidify the back of the rotation where it is most needed(lopez is barely a major league pitcher at this point..and wells sucks...)

so i think with wood, we are looking at solidifying the rotation as well as adding another young piece to the cubs core that can be instrumental in long term success and you get a couple of prospects to boot with the trade... building up the farm system is obviously important and im sure theo recognizes that

so you give up arguably your best reliever...to solidify your rotation in the back end where it is needed NOW..and also to set up for long term building and success..and as i added you get prospects in return

its not the greatest trade, but at the same time i think its a good trade, especially if fielder decides not to come here and things veer towards rebuilding

I think this trade makes the most sense if we do get Fielder.

I think Cubs fans need to get the word rebuild out of their vocabulary. I think I see what Theo is doing, he is attempting to just get the team younger, while still making the team better.

I think the bullpen is not an issue if the team sucks overall. You're never going to get to the setup guys often enough for that to matter anyway.

I also think the Fielder sweepstakes should be analyzed independently of whatever Theo and Jed are doing now. This trade makes sense even if they don't sign Prince Fielder.

i get what you're saying...rebuilding does seem to have a negative connotation..but theo is looking to replace some higher value veterans(or aging high contract players) with younger prospects and talent...i dont know if its really total rebuilding...essentially we are in the direction of rebuilding..and even with fielder we may be rebuilding some parts of the team

As I said earlier, this organization is so fucked up that it's not even a rebuild, it's just a "build"

Not so true, I think its fucked up, but on the right course to becoming not so fucked up, and than not fucked up at all.

Its just hard to sit there and watch the media, and than the message boards go on and on about "thed hoyerstein" or whatever the nick names that I see and hear about. I think a lot of the fans think that the cubs will be overnight contenders because of this, and you can kind of tell that this hiring has given a boner to the homer, kool aid drinking fans. This will be a work in progress.

What was Bostons record the season before he took over? just sayin.

He has his work cut out for him, with a worse inherited team, and less money to play with.

Yeah, I think that's just a matter of fans having unrealistic expectations. It would've been nice if they could just spend-spend-spend back into contention, but this is probably a wiser course of action in the long term. I don't think of it as being cheap, but being prudent. Can't build a skyscraper if you don't have the proper foundation set.
