I think the Boston Red Sox got a lot more popular after they won for the first time in a bajillion years. There's no reason the Cubs couldn't find that same success unless Cubs fans really are brain damaged.

I do not agree. The Cubs are as popular as they are because of the losing. I think the franchise winning a championship would actually have a negative overall affect on the team.

Three words. Boston Red Sox

Red Sox Notes: Compensation, Hearings, Epstein: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

Commissioner Bud Selig still hasn't received written arguments in the Cubs-Red Sox Theo Epstein compensation case, tweets MLB Network's Peter Gammons. Gammons moderated the Hot Stove Cool Music panel on Monday with both Epstein and Cherington. Cherington said that he expects direction from the commissioner's office soon, writes Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. Explained Cherington, "There was an expectation when Theo left that the Red Sox would receive significant compensation for allowing the Cubs to hire him and we haven’t been able to agree on what 'significant compensation’ means.'"

I highly doubt we end up giving them something significant. A few mid tier guys and money seems right.

They definitely did. I remember everyone hopping on that bandwagon. Red Sox shirts and hats were fucking everywhere for awhile. So glad that Big Papi phase is basically over, so annoying.

No brett, the team is popular because of being nationally televised for so long... like Atlanta. Stop being dumb.

Ever hear of loveable losers?

Atlanta never was as popular as the Cubs in the last 30. That kinda conflicts with the Superstation theory

Ya, the Mets have that nickname too...

the Cubs are called that because they lose, not because they have fans only because of it.

Brett, I think just about every television market gets WGN piped in and also as a broadcast signal, not something you have to buy cable or whatever for. TBS is a cable channel, so the Braves won't reach as large of an audience as the Cubs do.

Also, any Cubs fan worth their salt hopes for the Cubs to win as often as possible. Those who cling to the notion of losing being part of their identity have their priorities messed up. If the Cubs ever get to be good again, they'd be as popular as the Yankees are. Winning = more fans.

National broadcasts of day games reaching generations of kids/adults after school/work every weekday. That's what it is.

It's none of that lovable loser bullshit.

If you really think that's what it I understand exactly where your bias is.

No they are. 5x hits of Cubs vs Mets on google

The Cubs would gain some fans but Lose fans who cheer for them because of the underdog. Of the 3 million at Wrigley 2 million plus dont care if there is even a game
