So I had a blonde moment and I hadnt ordered anything off amazon since I had my last apartment, and being oblivious, bought a new digital camera and accidentally shipped it to my old apartment( I changed my billing address, but didnt notice I kept my ship to address separate). (I noticed it when i ordered some accessories yesterday and the ship to address caught my eye, before I purchased).

So it was scheduled to be delivered today. I called USPS and this is what they told me.

1. Its "allegedly" out for delivery and theres nothing they can do at this point (you seriously cant call the guy and tell him to hold a package?!).

2. We deliver to addresses not people.

3. Theres nothing I can do and have no legal recourse, and kept going on and on telling me not to show up at the current residents door step (something I had no intention of doing).

4. He basically finished with, "If they sign for it, as opposed to telling them its not theirs, im screwed".

5. they would call me back if they were able to do anything.

Basically the guy became a huge dick the moment I said "Sent to wrong address". Like all he cared about was covering USPS ass instead of helping a customer. I'm like dude, Its my fault I shipped it to the wrong address, i get that, but is their anything we can do about it.

What I did after talking to USPS, was to call the apartment manager and tell them I am a former resident and accidentally shipped a package through amazon to my old address, and if they can contact the current resident and tell them to drop it off at the apartment office and I can come pick it up.

They said they would, but im pretty sure it got piled on top of their I dont give a shit list, since im not a current resident, aside from the skyrocketing cost of such a shitty apartment their lack of responsiveness was part of the reason I left.

First thing is, I don't even know if they require a signature for this, if they just left it at the door, Im sure the residents could claim they never got it. i.e. chaulk it up to someone took it off their door step. If it requires a signature, at least there would be a paper trail.

I'd like to assume most people would do the right thing, but I don't. I am operating under the assumption these dickwads get the package see someone elses name on it, but open it right up.

Im assuming basically if tomorrow, if the apartment place falls through, if USPS falls through, I basically have to chaulk it up to a loss. The camera was almost 300 bucks, but I don't know if its worth the effort to call the police and waste tax payer dollars for something im pretty sure some obscure legal bullshit would prevent them from being able to do anything about.

The USPS guy seemed pretty clear that if the residents didnt "try" to get the package back to me, legally there was nothing doing.

I never use USPS. They suck. UPS at any time can contact the driver about a specific package. I don't know why USPS can't except for they suck and are out dated. I have got home to a ups notice on my door and called them to track down it and redeliver that night or meet the guy. It's still your camera just go over and ask for it. If they refuse call the cops and show them the receipt. If they say they don't have it show them where they signed for it.

Well it's a federal offense for them to tamper with the package in ANY WAY if it's not addressed to them.

You can call Amazon and ask if signature was required.

UPS and Fed Ex both have their issues as well, but no doubt they are easier to get almost ANYTHING accomplished with when there is an issue. USPS blows ass.

I contacted the retailer but didnt ask.

So according to the tracking info, it still hasnt been delivered (and to my knowledge, the postal service doesnt deliver this late, i know for sure in that area, always had my mail before I got home at 5-6pm) and the estimated delivery date was changed to june 11 (from an ETA of June 7) . Dont know if they ended up getting ahold of the guy and re-routing it.

You have no idea, how much in the middle of my conversation with this douchebag I wanted to say no wonder your organization is hemorrhaging money. he was just a huge ass.

USPS was the only option I had, its all this retailer shipped with.

I hate to sound all doom and gloom, but I doubt the Post Office would ask for a signature. I think they only require a signature for something sent Certified Mail. Is there a chance the mailbox is too small for the package? If so they may leave a package slip requiring them to come to the post office and pick it up.

If they didn't deliver it the package will go back to the post office for redelivery. Call the local Post Office back.

You can pay extra and require a signature on any pkg. through USPS. They ask me all the time if I want it.

If you paid with a cc you may have some recourse there with your cc company. If you don't ever receive the item, regardless of it being your fault, they might work with you. Most cc companies have been good about that sort of thing in the past. Nowadays, who knows, but it is worth a shot.

Hopefully they will release it to you, may be tough without any ID showing your old address. Try to find something showing your name and that old address.

You have the option to refuse payment. To ask the retailer to open a dispute case as well. I deal with this shit for a living but if no one is willing to work with you, ultimately it is YOUR fault. The retailer and shipper followed your instructions

USPS is often used by FedEx for small, uninsured items. Once it is in USPS hands they don't track it, they don't even report that it has been delivered only that it went out for delivery.

You have no guaranteed recourse here what so ever. You have to hope that the someone it was delivered to follows the golden rule and tells USPS it was delivered to the wrong address. They will do a return to sender and you can start the shipping process over.

As Supra said, try your credit card company. You never know...

On a related note, the dumbass ex wife had a package sent here recently...after three long years of being gone! She stopped at my house unannounced and I refused to answer the door. The next day I left her shit on the porch and texted her to come and get it. At first she acted like she didn't know who the text was from, then suddenly wised up and said she would get it. She never said thanks or that she got it but it wasn't there when I got home. Stupid whore!

I should have said I was going by my own experiences. I mail packages all the time and they have never once asked me if I wanted a signature for a package, but they will ask me if I want insurance on it. And I also have never received a package through the post office that I had to sign for. Not saying some vendors don't send stuff that way, but I have never run across it Usually if it is something I have ot sign for it comes Fed Ex.

This is just an afterthought Has you been gone long enough from that address that your mail forwarding has expired?

Dude, was the camera itself bought from Amazon or through a seller on Amazon Marketplace?
