So I had a blonde moment and I hadnt ordered anything off amazon since I had my last apartment, and being oblivious, bought a new digital camera and accidentally shipped it to my old apartment( I changed my billing address, but didnt notice I kept my ship to address separate). (I noticed it when i ordered some accessories yesterday and the ship to address caught my eye, before I purchased).
So it was scheduled to be delivered today. I called USPS and this is what they told me.
1. Its "allegedly" out for delivery and theres nothing they can do at this point (you seriously cant call the guy and tell him to hold a package?!).
2. We deliver to addresses not people.
3. Theres nothing I can do and have no legal recourse, and kept going on and on telling me not to show up at the current residents door step (something I had no intention of doing).
4. He basically finished with, "If they sign for it, as opposed to telling them its not theirs, im screwed".
5. they would call me back if they were able to do anything.
Basically the guy became a huge dick the moment I said "Sent to wrong address". Like all he cared about was covering USPS ass instead of helping a customer. I'm like dude, Its my fault I shipped it to the wrong address, i get that, but is their anything we can do about it.
What I did after talking to USPS, was to call the apartment manager and tell them I am a former resident and accidentally shipped a package through amazon to my old address, and if they can contact the current resident and tell them to drop it off at the apartment office and I can come pick it up.
They said they would, but im pretty sure it got piled on top of their I dont give a shit list, since im not a current resident, aside from the skyrocketing cost of such a shitty apartment their lack of responsiveness was part of the reason I left.
First thing is, I don't even know if they require a signature for this, if they just left it at the door, Im sure the residents could claim they never got it. i.e. chaulk it up to someone took it off their door step. If it requires a signature, at least there would be a paper trail.
I'd like to assume most people would do the right thing, but I don't. I am operating under the assumption these dickwads get the package see someone elses name on it, but open it right up.
Im assuming basically if tomorrow, if the apartment place falls through, if USPS falls through, I basically have to chaulk it up to a loss. The camera was almost 300 bucks, but I don't know if its worth the effort to call the police and waste tax payer dollars for something im pretty sure some obscure legal bullshit would prevent them from being able to do anything about.
The USPS guy seemed pretty clear that if the residents didnt "try" to get the package back to me, legally there was nothing doing.
