I think the Nets have finally realized that there's nothing they can offer that Orlando wants in a trade & that there's a strong chance that D-Will signs with Dallas, who could offer better trade packages for Howard.

This move reeks of desperation. Say what you want about Johnson's contract, he's a known name, who's been an All-Star & Olympian. The Nets need atleast 1 marquee name as they open their new stadium in their new hometown. They couldn't afford to wait & see if they would be left with Brook Lopez as the face of the Brooklyn Nets.

David Haugh made a good point today about this deal...it most likely weakens both teams...and weakens the conference. Atlanta over the last 5 years have been pretty much "gatekeepers" in the conference. They were the measuring stick, as far as I was concerned, for teams to know if they were ready to be elite or not. They were never going to win the conference, but they were going to make the playoffs every year for the foreseeable future. Unless Howard goes to Brooklyn...then that is different.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  2. Oakland Raiders
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
Atlanta won the deal imo.

No, they didn't get good talent in return. But that's not the point here. They got rid of a contract that was going to prevent them from getting better for the next few seasons. By getting rid of JJ's contract, ATL will be in a good position to improve because they'll have a lot of cap space over the next couple of seasons starting next year. They'll be the one's in position to add free agents and sell playing with Horford and maybe Josh Smith. They'll be in position to trade for a bigger contract and give back little in return.

With the deal the Nets just gave Wallace, they'll be handicapped for quite some time.
especially with JJ's deal and potentially D.Will's deal. And they don't have an amnesty clause to use since they used it on Travis Outlaw.

ATL got some picks and some depth, as well as some guys they could release to create further cap space

judging from the deal, i think the nets are pretty desperate

Atlanta is going into rebuilding mode. Danny Ferry is the new GM. He received a 6-year deal, so obviously that'll give him some time in order to re-tool the roster. I mean, taking over a playoff team is always nice, but a team with a second-round ceiling isn't too exciting.

All the players Atlanta will get for Johnson are trash, yes, but their biggest motivation was obviously to shed payroll as they go along, instead of having Johnson who clogs up nearly a third of their payroll. If they're able to get some value for Josh Smith in a trade, it might be wise to rebuild around Al Horford and Jeff Teague. Obviously, those aren't sexy names, but players in the NBA always seem to like visiting Atlanta. Maybe they can start luring some free agents down there .

It's going to be interesting to see if Atlanta goes for a full-fledged rebuild as opposed to a gut-and-go rebuild.

a nucleus of Harris,Horford, and Smith is not bad to start

they have depth, assets, and some flexibility to make a trade, sign and trade, or sign a player

Harris is not good enough to be a nucleus-caliber player. Jeff Teague has probably caught up to him as it is.

Smith and Horford are both natural PF's. Their core is pretty piss-poor right now.

very debatable...he needs to be in the right situation

smith is changing his game so he can really be more of an SF...i think he's finally hitting his potential

the core is barely different than the one that just went to the playoffs

other than dumping a very overrated player in joe johnson, getting devin harris, and some other assets

plus i said, "to start", in other words, they're going to build on it....

especially with the cap space they will have

It's really not. He is probably not even in the top 20 best PG's in the NBA.

Smith is too poor of a shooter to be a good SF. That is his body type but he doesn't have the shooting to do it and makes bad decisions in the half-court.

Getting rid of that massive contract was a very good thing for the Hawks seeing as they were going nowhere anyway.

i really don't think utah is the right place for him...he was much better in New Jersey

considering his last season? he's probably not 20 best..

but that team was heavy in the post and i don't harris was ever a good fit there...

his shooting has improved every year(meaning, outside of the paint)

with his size and athletic ability to get into the paint, i'm not terribly concerned with his shooting(which as i said, is still improving)

he has a tendency to make a bone headed play, although his TO percentage isn't awful

i can agree on this...the team was going to continue to make the playoffs but not go any further, there wasn't really any direction
