think speed bro....
Huh? Are you saying a new pc? I dont need a better PC for a HTPC. This 5 yr old dual processor is fast enough when it isnt bogged down with all these backround programs.
think speed bro....
After following Shifty's advice the PC is blazing along like new again. After running all the scans that Ares recommended I haven't seen anything to be concerned about reported so I will probably stick with Avast as is must have been doing its job.
Now I need to turn those processes off for startup.
Thanks again Shifty and Ares.
You shouldnt have to be a computer OS expert in order to use one. That's the beauty of Mac because they are useable by more people than any other OS with less problems and downtimeCool, I'm a Database Administrator for a Fortune 500 company, I have a stupid amount of time in every major OS there is.
If you are relying on software instead of yourself then you're being silly.

Without turning this into a religious war, here is what I say:I think you are missing the point a bit.... the Mac OS is not some infallible piece of software.... people have problems with it..... it can be infected by stuff just like a Windows OS can.... if you rely on being a Mac user to keep you safe from all malware, viruses, rootkits, etc.... you are naive.
The Mac OS is a minority in the market for a reason and TBH Mac being a minority to Windows is the main reason you are safer from malicious software.... people would rather hit Windows with malware because there are a ton more users of that OS.... if the market were reversed people would make the same argument about Windows being safer because fewer douches would be writing malicious shit to hit Windows with.
I do not like the Mac OS but I do not claim it is a bad product.... but people who think the Mac OS is this super safe/ idiot-proof piece of software are being naive....
If you like Mac, by all means use and enjoy it.... but I do not recommend telling people "Use Mac, you can just be dumber and use it and not have to try to learn about the software you are using" cause that is counter productive.... people should learn about the software they use and have basic capabilities to protect and/or fix their OS if a problem comes up rather than blindly leaning on an OS an assuming it will never break.... I am a Database programmer and I can tell you one thing about computer software..... it all breaks eventually.
I some areas I am. In some areas you are more successful, like fapping."-Everyone isnt a computer expert. Beleve it or not, I hve sold over 1 billion dollars of computers and services in my life "
Did ya ever notice that any posting Ommy gets involved in always resorts to him telling us that he was somehow way more successful at whatever the subject is than the rest of us slugs?

I have a HTPC that I use for our home theater. It's basic functions are Torrents, XBMC, converting video formats and web browsing.
Not trying to escalate this very rare and uncommon internet occurrence of a civil fanboy-free mac vs windows discussion. But with the functions you have listed, have you considered the trusty penguin?
It is very rare that Windows vs Mac is debated on da internets....
Avast has gotten bloaty. Going with MS security essentials should be fine for the casual surfer.
my torrent usage probably makes me more than a casual surfer... aarrr
Without turning this into a religious war, here is what I say:
-Mac OS is Unix based and inherently more secure than anything MS has ever developed.
-More hackers hate MS because of their business practices. It's a fact and requires bulky and problematic security measures and software to be implemented. That along with endless bugs and usability issues make it nearly as exhausting to use as it was in the mid 90s.
-Everyone isnt a computer expert. Beleve it or not, I hve sold over 1 billion dollars of computers and services in my life yet I'm not very good using it. The average 14 year old boy is better than me with it. But I more closely reflect computer users as a whole. They are novices, housewives, grandmothers and guys that dont care about becoming an expert. This is where Macs shines. In my den I have a iMac to my left and a Toshiba 7.X laptop to my right and am switching back and forth all day. The MS based product has significantly more issues and is much less intuitive. Oh, and without Apple and apple care my wife wouldnt be able to own and operate a computer
-In a world of the Internet of Things it all must become easier to use not harder. Without Apple we would still be living in the 90s because MS isnt really committed to easier to use, just selling more. They are only committed to eaiser as Apple forces them to be. And that's one of the many values of Apple, which is to keep MS honest (like that's even possible)

I would just do a clean install of windows. Shit corrupts over time and imo its worth doing an install every 2-4 years. Pain in the ass, but I don't believe in the reg cleaners and whatnot. I think you risk just creating more problems.
