Nah, he'd be one less car on the road.

I plan to drive only when necessary. When convenience and practicality permit, I'll be walking, cycling or taking public transport. If I could limit driving to larger grocery trips and days to the coast, I'd be delighted.

There isn't much of one.

The two primary sports in Portland are basketball and soccer since those are the only two major league teams they have.

Until the Timber (their MLS) team came around all they had were the Trailblazers and, almost strangely, there is a pretty intense fandom there for them. Most people think goofy hipsters or whatever, but the trailblazers are extremely popular. MLS is getting more popular but their team sucks so I'm sure that doesn't help.

I don't know anyone from that area that gives a shit about the NFL. The Ducks are very popular though. Phil Knight is one part loved one part hated around there.

Yeah, I'll be completely ignoring the MLS, NBA and NCAA local teams. Since most Bears games will be on at 10am, I'll likely be doing for Bears games what I currently do for EPL soccer games - up early, coffee, smoke, and start drinking around half time. Just enough time to get a nice buzz on, post some Cutler smack on here, and go out and do something more interesting and worthwhile with my Sundays.

I've come to love being in Pacific Time, really nice for most things, especially sports.

It also helps that I don't sleep in late on weekends.

you're in vancouver? no shit bro. We were there a couple years ago and found the canadians to be much more rude there than in montreal. at least in the gaslamp district or whatever it was called. but they had strongbow in the pubs for like $20 so I tolerated it.

I was in Austin in October for a conference and stayed downtown, and I swear it felt like a carbon copy of river north. There was one street that had all the same restaurants as where I work. Cantina Laredo, Fogo de Chao, Fado, Chipotle. 6th street seemed like kind of a circus but then again I'm old and should kill myself. I also had just had ass surgery so I was walking around like a clubfooted shithead.

Oh, I also had a beer at Vince Young's steakhouse and the bartender was a major beardo choad.

The Gingerman was nice but they were too cool for school.

The Bourbon Girl on 6th street in Austin is a Chicago Bears bar. Watched the first Detroit game there, which sucked, of course, but won an autographed viktor stalberg hockey puck in a mandatory raffle.
lold at river north comparison with Austin. Oh boy . Please say it's atlwast not as expensive..

Try Alaska when its on at 9 am. When my sister lived there and I visited I basically rolled out of bed to football on.

What's the NFL scene like in Portland? I'm assuming pro football is too goober-mainstream for the hipsters, and those that do watch it are probably Seahawks fans mainly since it's right on the OR/WA border, with a smattering of Niners, Raiders and Broncos fans here and there, as is typical of the NW it seems.

I'll be repping the Navy and Orange regardless.

In researching bars for my trip I did find one bar that said it was a Bears bar. Reviews said it was a dump and would be full of "rude" Bears fans on Sundays lol. I don't remember the name of the place.

I need to find a place to go that will play the Blackhawks game while I'm there.

I like it too. I can't imagine having to start watching night games at 8:30 pm...

Night games are brutal on the east coast. I lived in FL for the Arizona miracle in '06 and didn't get to bed until almost 1:30.

My uncle moved from Chicago to Oregon a few years ago and rarely comes back to visit. He says it's absolutely beautiful. But good for you! I myself have considered a possible move in the next year or two. I cannot handle another winter like this past one. We're thinking Charleston. :)

Yeah I'm pretty excited about Bears night games that will start right after work and end around 9pm and not feeling sleep deprived at work the next day.

That sounds perfect. I'll have to try and live near it.

I thought I dreamt Denny Green's rant when I woke up the next day.

As I understand it that's one of the better things about Portland. Public transportation is good enough to leave the car at home a lot of the time. Also you have the Columbia River, and they've been doing the microbrewery thing a lot longer there than a lot of other towns so good local beer is plentiful. I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding other Midwestern transplants and Bears fans.

The whole reason I'm going to Portland is beer lol. And yes, from everything I've studied for my trip, I can just about get anywhere with their public transportation system. It seems to be quite excellent. The only thing that Mick might need a car for is if he wishes to go visit nature.

I lived there for several years.

If you like mini-brew beers, hiking, buying all new fishing tackle and 9 months of rain it's the place for you.

It's beautiful, but god does it never stop raining.

I'm sure I'll get used to it :)

I actually love having Bear games start at 10am. It leaves your entire afternoon free to do other stuff if you don't feel like watching other games.
