An outdoor game in Chavez Ravine in the winter could see mid 40 degree temps at night.

1991 outdoor NHL game in Las Vegas

The ice was laid down by Bob May of Ice Systems of America. According to May, the outside ice rink in Las Vegas was "a big challenge", using three times the refrigeration equipment as one would for a regular rink.

The air temperature at puck drop was around 85°F (going as high as 95°F during the course of the game) with 28% humidity, though the ice held up well.

I was going to mention that as well. I've had issues with getting on... lol Apparently, my lap top access works at least...

But yeah, after the success of 1991 (And holy hell I still remember hearing about that), the Frozen Fury was done shortly after from 1997 and has continued on. The now Kings/Avs traditional game will next be held at Las Vegas, I believe the MGM Grand Garden, on September 28th, 2013.

Christ, Allah, and Odin they're driving these outdoor games into the mud.

They should just make the allstar game outdoor and be done with it.

This isn't even about the gimmick of being an outdoor game, it's that you can have more seats and a higher ticket price for a premium event. They would be doing the same thing in indoor arenas once a year if their was a place big enough.

There should be two outdoor games. New Year's Day and Hockey Day in America. That is it. Also why in the **** are we playing the penguins? Yeah I know we are basically the two biggest teams in the league at the moment but still there is no rivalry there, no old timey hockey that goes back to the stone age.

I am waiting for one of these "big events" to be rained out. That will leave a lot of people holding expensive tickets to nothing.

Also, I quoted "big events" because they are watering it down to the point where "the" winter classic becomes ho-hum, nothing special. Just another over-priced game where nobody at the venue can see the puck. But if those tickets keep selling I guess they cannot be faulted.

Maybe the NHL has us scripted to play the Penguins in the finals this season. I have felt for years that they are not above "helping" series to come out the way the NHL thinks will be a big draw. (Some officiating just cannot be explained...)
