I have no problem with the contract. The problem I have is...where the hell does Stalberg fit on this roster? The guy is not really a fourth liner, and he doesn't have the brains to play higher up in the lineup. So uhhh....

Don't really feel like sugar coating this. Sorry. Stalberg is a shitty hockey player. He is a pussy, he has shitty hands, he can't pass, and he makes terrible decisions with the puck. Really, his only redeeming quality is his speed, but that does nothing if you don't use your speed intelligently to pressure the defense on the forecheck and cause turnovers. I really don't understand why we're bringing this guy back. He serves no purpose.

Smith, Morin, and even Olesz serves more purpose on this team than Stalberg does.

That's what Training Camp and the pre-season games will tell us I guess. Between the guys that are signed (and perhaps those still to be re-signed!) as well as Rockford players like Smith, Kruger, and Morin it looks like Camp is going to force folks to earn a position---there's gonna be a lot of guys vying for a few positions. Lots of people have been signed for the Bottom 6---no one has technically "made" the starting day roster yet. For all we know Stalberg may still end up being trade fodder. Looks to me like the lag in signing is likely more attributable to term in that he wanted a bit of security with more than one year and I can't argue with that stance. No one wants to be an NHL journeyman, especially at 26. You are right though that he does pose a LW problem on the 4th with Carcillo being a LW but eh, it's potentially a 4th line winger we're talking about here so if the team wants one of them to play their off-wing I think they will just do as told. I also don't think that Q/the team expect Carcillo and/or Mayers to be slotted into the wing positions for every game anyway so who knows how folks will be juggled around on the Bottom 6.

Actually we don't know JACK about what purpose Olesz serves for this team right now. All I know about him right now is that he's young, he got a $3 mil per contract from FLA before he'd earned it, that he will cost the Hawks $3 mil in kind, and that he missed half of this past season with injuries. We'll have to wait and see IF he's cleared to play soon and how he looks at TC and pre-season IF they keep him, IF he can get the rust off his game, and IF the change of scenery and different style of play in Chicago can pan out for the guy.

Oh, also I know this about Olesz. In his 6 or so seasons with FLA, the most he's ever scored in total Pts. is 6 more than Stalberg's first full NHL season which was with the Hawks last season---because I STILL want a fucking true 2C at some point I will gladly take Stalberg costing 70% less than Olesz for just a few points less if it helps cap-wise in getting me the 2C.

I'm happy with this. People may not like Stalberg that much, but he had 12 goals practically being on the 4th line all year... sometimes was able to move up and fill a role on a higher line for a few games at a time. He's got great speed, can draw penalties and by the end of the season was starting to hit too. I think he's a work in progress, still developing his game and who knows, by the end of these next two years people might want him back.

Stalberg is very frustrating to watch. Reminds me of Mendoza from the Mighty Ducks.

It's a miracle.......Pez and I agree on something. I could not have typed this any clearer than this. Hopefully this is trade bait to another unsuspecting club.

Olesz purpose is simple. Open up 4 million dollars and and a couple years contact space. If he scores 1 goal it's a bonus.

Let Morin, Smith, Beach etc etc play for that amount. They will give a better effort as 3rd and 4th liners than Barker Jr (#25) will. Dumb signing. Should have cut your losses and run.

Well, from what I've read, he's actually a good two-way forward, and a serviceable third liner. He's just massively overpaid for that role, and injury prone.

Stalberg just doesn't fit any role at the NHL level. He would probably be a pretty good AHL level player with that speed, but he's a dumb player, has a hard, but inaccurate shot, and bad hands. If he had some hockey sense, he could actually be a pretty good player, given his speed and size. Perfect tools to be a banging LW that causes havoc on the forecheck, plays physical, and goes to the net. But unfortunately, he doesn't do any of that. Guy is also lost in the defensive zone, which makes him a bad checking line player, even though he has the tools to excel at that role.

Olesz main purpose is clearing $4 mil in cap space, as Maiden said. Anything he can contribute to the Hawks is just a bonus.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but at the same time I wouldn't be quite so harsh with him especially at that price, and I know how we hate to bring money into it. But I think also with Brouwer gone Stalberg may just surprise people this year. He's not going to light the world on fire probably but I bet he lives up to this contract with all the shifts in the lineup their might finally be a spot for him there this year. I think there is no real harm here honestly, either he'll finally find his place, like he looked like he was doing toward the end of the season or he'll be in the box doing no harm and being a good practice player to have around. Then come trade deadline they might be able to deal him somewhere. He's not really taking anyone's spot if they earn it over him then they just play over him.

Assuming Stalberg doesn't make the team this year over players that beat him out in camp, like he did last year?

Damn so basically we signed a kid with 99 speed, 95 acceleration, 70 hand-eye, 70 off. awareness, 60 passing, 80 puck control, 40 dekeing, and 70 accuracy on wristers/slappers.

I could see Stalberg being sent down waivers and then being a call up if needed. 875K isn't terrible, but I'm assuming he's going to be a pawn in a trade or just sent out to Rockford.
